Former president Donald Trump encountered an unusually tough crowd at the Libertarian National Convention on Saturday night as the audience loudly booed him and used noisemakers to drown out his speech.

The first current or former president to speak at the third-party’s convention, Trump made several major promises to libertarians in the crowded, rowdy room, including assuring the audience that he would appoint a libertarian to his Cabinet if elected in November.

“Maybe you don’t want to win,” Trump said to a loud chorus of boos from the crowd. “Keep getting your 3 percent every four years.”

The raucous event for the former president marked a sharp departure from the typical celebratory atmosphere at such Trump campaign gatherings, normally full of thousands of supporters who travel from other states to see the former president while laughing and clapping to their favorite, often biting punchlines. Trump is said to derive energy from these trademark rallies and reacts to any disruption by threatening to have that person or people removed.

Trump received his warmest response when he said if reelected, he would pardon Ross Ulbricht, the mastermind behind the online [illegal] drug [darknet] market Silk Road, who was sentenced to life in prison in 2015. A Trump adviser was paid to seek clemency for Ulbricht in the final days of Trump’s administration, but no pardon was forthcoming.

In the midst of Trump’s address, a fistfight broke out between a Trump supporter and libertarian activist, and the libertarian was escorted out by security guards.

Trump, accustomed to friendly crowds, confronts repeated booing during Libertarian convention speech

Trump tried to praise “fierce champions of freedom in this room” and called President Joe Biden a “tyrant” and the “worst president in the history of the United States,” prompting some in the audience to scream back: “That’s you.”

From the NYT article:

Practically every time Mr. Trump was booed, his supporters responded by chanting, “We want Trump.” If those in MAGA hats cheered on a policy pronouncement, many of those opposed to Mr. Trump’s presence booed or shouted insults.

Often, the cycle ended only when someone began chanting, “End the Fed,” a unifying policy plank that everyone in attendance seemed to agree on.

Et tu Donald? Good way to make friends.

It would seem he doesn't react well to opposition.

Trump is not a libertarian. This reaction is not a surprise.

P
Trump's my guy. Big fan. Best POTUS since Founding Fathers.

He's called the Blue Collar Billionaire and him soliciting the LP shows he's campaigning to win every possible demographic.
I don't think he's ever changed a light bulb. Mowed a lawn. Taken out the garbage. Pumped his own gas.

So why do they call him blue collar? Because he's loud, crude, vulgar, and offensive? There is a blue collar stereotype, and I guess if someone who only knows blue collar workers as servants wanted to court them, that's what he'd do. How offensive! The stereotype is often inaccurate and exaggerated.

Mr. Trump needs to respect blue collar workers, not be one of them. Anyone who leads a pampered, indulged life should respect those who have the skills they lack.

<sigh> Trump's not looking to make friends but gain votes. The LP is typically insignificant in the big scheme of things, being reduced to a philosophical club in practice. Trump's challenge is for them to be relevant. There votes could make the difference as the OP said and Trump presented a compelling reason for theme to come out of the political shadows and side with a candidate the agree with more than the Demonrats.

And he reacts better than anyone to opposition.
We have never had a candidate who installed a Supreme Court that puts the Bill of Rights through the shredder before.

That's not libertarian.

So why do they call him blue collar?
Work ethic. He could be at any luxury resort in the world enjoying his wealth. Instead, as POTUS, he worked 16-18 hour days for $1 per year getting attacked 24/7 worse than we’ve ever seen ONLY because he loves his country.

You forget that while he worked for $1 a year, he charged the government so much money for Secret Service lodging and food at Mar a Lago that the entire agency's budget maxed out in August. He charged them $11,000 for golf carts they used to follow him around.
His daughter went to China with him and got immediate patents on her products.
He even wanted to hold the G7 or similar at his Miami Club in June, knowing it would be empty.
Set up his hotel in D.C. (now closed) and all the foreign dignitaries would stay there to impress him.
His 16-18 hour days (allegedly) were filled with impeachable offenses and felonious election activities.
