Press freedom under attack, watchdog index shows – DW – 05/03/2024

Reporters Without Borders has cautioned of declining state support for press freedom around the world. The group released its 2024 World Press Freedom rankings, showing a mild improvement in press freedom in Germany.

After reading through the 2024 World Press Freedom Index, I have come to the conclusion that RSF as an organization can no longer the trusted to be objective. It's ranking of countries are totally unbelievable. Take for example South Africa rank 38 which is far higher than respectable countries like Australia, Italy, Poland, South Korea & Japan. Really? You mean to tell me that I'm better off being a journalist in SA than say Japan. It's safer and easier to get information in SA than say Italy.

They dare say that press freedom is under attack when they come up with such a listing. What a farce.

You mean to tell me that I'm better off being a journalist in SA than say Japan. It's safer and easier to get information in SA than say Italy.

Well, tomorrow I will have to look into this, and see if there are alternatives to RSF. I trust the DW with their news, as the DW is German, and we know that the Germans make great chocolate, have advanced technology, nice roads, and are good looking also.

Germany did a total 180, from the worst of the worst back in the 1940s, to now a peaceful nation.

Yes, the US has a polarization problem, but how is Canada better on the chart below? Doesn't Canada have political issues also?

That's the point. The matrix doesn't reflect reality of the countries. Canada is one such country. Canadians have Trudeau to thank for that.

The far right AfD party is currently the second strongest party in Germany and looks poised to take control in 2-3 elections, ready to sell us out to china and russia and send any non-germans back to their home countries or, failing that, to the concentration camps.

And our chocolate isn't that good, either. You want to go to the swiss or belgians for that.

Stop being coy Merkel & Olaf are very China & Russia friendly as well. I specifically remember you guys laughed at Trump at the UN for suggesting you're too dependent on Russia for gas. Both sides are equally bad. They don't walk the talk. Don't tell me "oh, we are not aware of their autocracy at that time".

Merkel is no longer a factor in german politics, and neither will be Scholz after next years election.

And I'm not a fan of either. Under Merkel, german politics basically stood still for 1.5 decades, and Scholz is a corrupt pseudo-technocrat.

I'm not sure why you appear to be under the dillusion that because I don't like our soon to be blue-brown overlords, that I'm a fan of the former main stream parties.

Because 2024 is not the only year where the results don't reflect the press situation in rankings. The link I gave have options to look back at previous years as well. The pattern is very clear. SA and some other no so free countries remain high in rankings while countries with functioning democracy always perform below SA.

So when your organization consistently produces such ranking, do you think you can be trusted?

Why would reporters without borders skew results?
isn’t that the exact opposite of putting out an unbiased report is supposed to be about?

The AfD is ruining your homeland. Hopefully Germany can shut the AfD down forever. It is a shame that the far-right have been picking up momentum in the USA as well (such as MAGA). Any political party with the prefix "far" in it, I stay away from.

And yes, Belgian or Swiss chocolate is better, but Schogetten is pretty darn good as well.

Agreed. Trudeau is also a racist, and should be impeached for his actions that he did at the turn of the 21st century. I made a post about that a while ago. He is also anti-life.

It depends on whether he agrees with the social policies of the country in question. There is apparently some relationship between that and the level of press freedom in that country.

The AfD is doing nothing. It's just a party.

A sizeable amount of germans, in some areas a majority of germans, are still Nazis or at least willing to tolerate the rule of Nazis. We have learned nothing.

Schogetten are alright, though.

Its a ranking of "press freedom".

Political polarization or other metrics for being "better off" are not meant to be under consideration. Maybe the South African state does legally restrict journalists more than other places. But Im not just going to assume its the case. The linked article says nothing about it.

That is the same in the US. There are still a small percentage of people who support slavery in the south.

In Thuringia the number of people willing to vote for the AfD is stable around 25 to 30 %. Their leader has just been convicted for using a forbidden Nazi motto in a speech. This has not hurt his approval ratings in the least.

I see major parallels between the AfD and Trump. Both are using their power and leverage to spew hate, and both have double digit approval ratings.

You tell me. I'm wondering that myself. But they did produce those rankings. Your eyes are not lying to you neither are mine to me.

One's organization mission doesn't make it a immune to corruption or bias or any negative attributes.

Like the saying goes look at what they do not what they say
