I’d argue it was a bad move by Abraham “I am not nor ever have been in favor of making voters or jurors of negroes, nor of qualifying them to hold office, nor to intermingling with white people” Lincoln to let all traitors go home with no repercussions. While I would let the rank and file go home, the leadership of the Confederacy should have been executed their treason. Vile Jim Crow laws would have been a lot less likely if Southern leadership had been cut off and Reconstruction wasn’t prematurely ended so Republicans could have kept the 1876.

I sincerely doubt that those that committed treason against Nazis didn’t know there was either success or death in their future because that is your future if you commit treason.

I oppose what the Nazis did because I wish the Nazis would have just let themselves be overthrown. I know that is a fairytale but that is what I wanted. I’m not surprised by what they did. That’s what countries tend to do if they can when their own countrymen attempt to betray them. Confederates should have weighed the same decisions and should have suffered the same consequences for it.

You'd have to live during that time to understand. Most owned slaves then and held the same views about the Negro. Union army treated them better than the US Army at least they allowed them to fight. Instead of having them do menial tasks because they thought they weren't intelligent enough to do complex tasks. It was later in WW2 that Negroes proved their abilities. After WW2 they were still segregated.

It's not a question of "right" or "wrong". The Nazis did what most countries do after a failed coup - they got rid of the perpetrators.

I thought the same thing after watching Tuskegee Airmen! They were proud it's unimaginable but that's what life was for them for hundreds of years, inch by inch.

Also coming home from the war was the Vietnam vets and the Japanese Americans from concentration camps.
