We really are living in the real life Los Santos.
I do not play violent video games, never have, never will (or video games in general, except for harmless racing games at the arcade), but have heard of Los Santos, which is a fictional city full of crime in a Rockstar Games franchise called GTA. GTA is short for Grand Theft Auto, a game introduced at the very end of the 20th century and popularized in the early 21st century by teens and young adults. I despise GTA, cos my dad's car got stolen 5 years ago in daylight by teens and car thefts began increasing in the 2020s. Man, dystopia has become a reality in some ways.
By the way, for the others, I gave a summary of the article, as not everyone has 5 minutes to read it:
The article by Richard Winton, published on April 3, 2024, reports one of the largest cash heists in Los Angeles history, with as much as $30 million stolen from a money storage facility in Sylmar. The burglary occurred on Easter Sunday, March 31, 2024, and the thieves were able to breach both the building and the safe where the money was stored.
Sources familiar with the investigation suggest that the burglars gained access through the roof of the Gardaworld building, but it is unclear how they managed to bypass the alarm system. The Canada-based security company has not commented on the matter. The theft was discovered on Monday when the operators of the business opened the vault, revealing a large cut on the side of the building covered with plywood.
Authorities were alerted, and the LAPD's Mission Division station responded to gather evidence. At least one alarm was triggered during the crime, but it was not connected to local law enforcement. The break-in is described as elaborate and professional, with few individuals knowing about the large sums of cash in the safe.
Scott Andrew Selby, co-author of "Flawless: Inside the Largest Diamond Heist in History," suggests that this is a well-planned job by an experienced crew, possibly with inside intelligence. The investigation will focus on crimes with similar methods of entry, and it may be challenging to trace or launder the stolen cash depending on whether there are records of serial numbers or if the bills are already in circulation.
The FBI and LAPD are currently investigating the theft, which could be the largest cash heist in Los Angeles' history. The prior largest cash robbery was in 1997 when $18.9 million was taken from the Dunbar Armored facility. The investigation remains ongoing for unsolved heists like the multimillion-dollar jewelry theft from a Brink's truck in 2022.
Rooftop burglaries have been rare in Southern California since the 1970s, but a series of bank robberies occurred in the San Gabriel Valley a decade ago. The most recent rooftop burglary was last July in 2023 when about $600,000 worth of wine was stolen from a Venice wine specialist.
