Jackson - An alarming situation has unfolded in Jackson, Mississippi, where 215 bodies were discovered buried in unmarked graves behind a state jail. Families of the deceased were left in the dark until last month. Some grave sites were only identified by a number and a metal rod, raising concerns about the lack of transparency and respect in handling the deceased.

[While I think the study of human decomposition is ((morbidly)) fascinating because it's scientific] isn't consent involved with that? Can prisoners give consent? I really don't know.

Very good questions imho. What about their families?

Shirly you don't think that Mississippi law Enforcement had anything to do with this.
Clearly they had no knowledge of the goings on at, checks notes, their own property!

That is some sick and evil doings.
This gets into a subject that some may find disturbing. Prison cemeteries are common, and are supposed to be the final resting place for unclaimed bodies. The main question is whether the prison notified the families. If not, there’s the main scandal.

The secondary question is should prisons maintain their cemeteries. That could be a task assigned to inmates much like maintaining the rest of the grounds. In some places I think it is.

It may be troubling, but cemeteries do become overgrown and forgotten. Some years ago it I was struck by the realization that I may be the last living person to know of the location of a cemetery. I’m one generation removed from the time when men in the community dug the graves, and heard stories of grave diggers encountering forgotten graves even in well maintained cemeteries. It happens, and the world revolves right along, untroubled.

Cold? Maybe. Maybe it’s from growing up beside a cemetery. Went there last year and noticed the depressions of the forgotten graves. Maybe it’s from the idea that cemeteries are more an act of remembrance by friends and families, but what of when friends and family pass away in turn and there are none to remember?

I hate the idea of eternity in a box in a forgotten grave in an overgrown corner of some obscure cemetery. Yikes, gives me the shivers.

I understand that there are cemeteries for unclaimed bodies. But, I thought all bodies needed to be embalmed and in a box or something. Did you read the article? According to the article, this cemetery was discovered by someone noticing buzzards. And there is also a case where an inmate was killed by an officer and the family was not notified of his death and could not claim his body. There needs to be an investigation into this imho.

This is one of the most egregious cases of neglect in a jail in recent years and there are so many.

The *best* case is sloppy tracking of "john doe" or unclaimed bodies from poor family notification. But one must wonder what it took for 200+ dead to accumulate (IDed or not). A quick search reveals 19 deaths in 2022 at Riker's Island, an equivalent facility for all of NY City, and 22 last year in Cook County Jail (all of Chicago). This does not seem to be the sort of facility where prisoners are kept long term.

(This is a little confusing as the articles describe the location as a "state jail" (no caps) in Hinds County and not a county jail or state prison. It does not seem to be a state prison, but perhaps they have some sort of combinded, state-run, jail facility in the Jackson area. I don't know yet.)

Even with a high death rate, the number who weren't claimed by family seems rather high.

Thank you, I guess I'm too old with my pop culture references.
My eyes are a little messed up this week and I misread that as "my poop culture reference," so I went back looking for where you had mentioned poop culture.

What can you make out of this?

A broach? I think I have to stop. This topic was a bit to serious for a long series of Airplane! jokes. Though I did realize this one (a bit long and I had to look up the text) might suit you better:

Elaine: What's the matter?

Ted: My orders came through.

My squadron ships out tomorrow.

We're b*mb the storage depots at Daiquiri at 1800 hours.

We're coming in from the north, below their radar.

Elaine: When will you be back?

Ted: I can't tell you that.

It's classified.
