Satan was a cherubim. The cherubim serve the purpose of magnifying the holiness and power of God. This is one of their main responsibilities throughout the Bible. In addition to praising God, they also serve as a visible reminder of the majesty and glory of God and His abiding presence with His people. Cherubim are in front of God's throne (seraphim are above the throne). This is where Satan's heart got prideful and he envied God.
