"Those dang kids and their _______ music!" has been a rallying cry for every generation. The truth is that every generation has a lot of garbage music - we just forget it over time, and only remember the winners.
I'd like to know who the "winners" are of this generation -most of what I hear is Ariana Grande type teen pop, bro country, and rap.

Check the YouTube machine for an artist known as LP.
You’re welcome.

You should check out Nickel Creek. They are winners. Forget the pop stuff.
I heart radio won't let me forget the 'pop stuff ' it's piped in my workplace over the intercom, so I get a minimum of 8.5 hours a day of it.

My condolences.... Sounds like you've been stuck in an elevator for a while, although elevator music might be a bit better. LOL

I once worked in a factory that had "elevator music" playing; Ray Coniff, Dean Martin, etc.
I miss those days after decades of the "all Bon Jovi channel"

I've never heard of her, but since Phil from Wings of Pegasus raves about her vocal talent, it is time for me to check it out.
She covers Beyoncé’s “Halo” like a February nor’easter. (The black & white version)

So time to run for president? :)

He's Australian. They don't have presidents. They have the guy who floats in the pond in an inner tube while drinking a Fosters, Andy.

Well, our PM a few years back did like a beer in the pool.

And after he'd left office:

But Fosters? Nobody, and I mean nobody drinks the stuff. It's disgusting.

Bob Cesca is a liberal podcaster who gives a lot of love to independent artists for his into a interstitial music. Mostly rock, electronica and pop that would have charted in the 70s or 80s.

Today's music. Well, it's not that bad.

I took my girl to Knebworth in the UK back when I was 23. Gotta see the boys live! They came on half hour after they should have finished. Half the crowd gone. We were lighting fires in the field to stay warm. They left the stage about 2:30am. What a set.

Now, nearly a half century later I would never have thought I would be telling the same woman earlier this evening 'Hey, girl. The new Stones track is on YouTube!'

Nice that we all grew older together. Lucky me.

Failed MAGA candidate melts down at Taylor Swift: 'You’re celebrating witchcraft'

Writing on Twitter, MAGA podcaster and failed gubernatorial candidate [but current local GOP chair] Kandiss Taylor slammed Swift for supposedly turning to the dark side and pushing her fans into witchcraft.

You’re celebrating witchcraft," she charged. "You’re influencing innocent minds to be enticed with the dark side of spirituality."

Taylor wrapped up her rant against Swift by warning her that God could take away the blessings that He gave her that made her so famous in the first place.

"Let’s see how much Lucifer cares about you or your career," she thundered. "I promise. He doesn’t."

^_^

"Audiences and elite tastemakers alike have decided Taylor Swift’s narcissistic lyrics and cliched music are a cultural triumph — but why would we celebrate this?"

^_^

After the last 8 years of unrelenting narcissism, it is Taylor Swift's narcissism which which is leading to societal decline! The deflection is strong...
The Federalist includes a bunch of anti-vaxers and election-deniers so that sabotaged the credibility of the source for me. That said I read the article:

1) The article itself commented on the way the music industry is changing. So a lot of music professionals who used to dominate no longer do and are quite annoyed by that. I guess classical musicians and the aristocrats who sponsored them would have had the same contempt for the Beatles. The Swift way is a new way of marketing music, heavy on social media and concerts and she clearly has a strong business sense and is immensely successful. If money mattered to me or was any kind of measure of true success I would probably think of her as some kind of business model to emulate.

2) Personally I think she is attractive and clever but a little too aware of how good she looks and far too self-obsessed. If I were available and she was interested I would not ask her out because as this article points out she spends most of her time bellyaching about ex-boyfriends, is clearly very high maintenance and she is not wife material. Sorry Taylor it wouldn't work out between us ;-)

3) Her music is the product of a marketing machine that is playing the numbers. The lyrics and music are good but not that original. From a theological perspective, I have her pegged under individualistic materialism with liberal valuations of choice and feminism. She has faith but at least in her music, it is only shallow and not well articulated and her narcissism gets in the way.

4) Whatever you think about her music she is clearly connecting with this generation. My wife and daughter bought tickets to her concert and despite my protestations will hear, see and speak no evil about the woman.

All music appeals to emotions - the alternative would be appealing to reason, and I just can't see how that would work. An appreciation for the beauty of music is still an emotional response, and beautiful music comes in all forms and styles.
True, I'm listening to Coltrane right now. :)

Good summary.
I was thinking about when my late 1st wife and I were dating; seldom did our musical tastes ever meet- I was a fan of RUSH, The Clash, Talking Heads, etc. groups that usually make females cringe. We did see Foreigner in concert together before we married (The Judds, Beach Boys, and Cher, were some of the concerts I attended with her as well after marriage)

She was a big Olivia Newton John fan. While I wouldn't run out to get her latest recording, I at least had respect for her talent- she sang country, rock(with ELO, no less) and was a pop superstar, and movie star as well (Grease). In hindsight, she was pretty good.

I think that TS, is a sign of decline in the quality of music. Even music I don't like isn't as good as it once was. ONJ > TS
