  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Here's a gifted WaPo article:
>> A grand jury has indicted former president Donald Trump for a raft of alleged crimes stemming form his efforts to overturn the results of the 2020 election.
Trump’s legal team was notified Tuesday that the former president had been indicted, according to a person familiar with the matter, who spoke on the condition of anonymity because the indictment had not yet been made public. <<

Trump for some reason gets more support from Republican supporters the more crimes he is accused of doing.
Almost anyone else, loses support. Hilary Clinton lost crucial support in 2016 on Comey stating her email server investigation had been re-opened.

What I can't understand, is why many Republican supporters seem to like that Trump might have committed crimes? and like that Trump might have tried to steal the 2020 election. And why Pence's standing with these Republican supporters tanked due to him not illegally accepting the illegal alternative slate of electors and unconstitutionally throwing out millions of legal votes.

It's hard to fathom.

If you have evidence of someone committing a crime, the moral thing to do would be to report it to the proper authorities and not just alluding to it on an Internet message board.

No one should be above the law. I'm glad that this indictment has been done.

Article from the AP:
Trump charged by Justice Department for efforts to overturn his 2020 presidential election loss

WASHINGTON (AP) — Donald Trump was indicted Tuesday on four felony counts that accuse him of working to overturn the results of the 2020 presidential election in the run-up to the violent riot by his supporters at the U.S. Capitol.

Even in a year of rapid-succession legal reckonings for Trump, Tuesday’s criminal case, with charges including conspiring to defraud the United States government that he once led, was especially stunning in its allegations that a former president assaulted the underpinnings of democracy in a frantic and ultimately failed effort to cling to power.

It accuses him of repeatedly lying about the election results, turning aside repeated overtures from some aides to tell the truth but conspiring with others to try to improperly change vote totals in his favor. It says that on the day of the Jan. 6, 2021, riot, he attempted to “exploit” the chaos by pushing to delay the certification of the election results even after the building was cleared of violent protesters.

Trump’s claims of having won the election, said the indictment, were “false, and the Defendant knew they were false. But the defendant repeated and widely disseminated them anyway — to make his knowingly false claims appear legitimate, to create an intense national atmosphere of mistrust and anger, and to erode public faith in the administration of the election.”
Related coverage

Federal prosecutors say Donald Trump was “determined to remain in power” in conspiracies that targeted a “bedrock function of the United States federal government: the nation’s process of collecting, counting and certifying the results of the presidential election.”

It's hard to fathom.
David Frum, a speechwriter for George W Bush, about as classical conservative as they come prior to Trump, had the quote that always comes to mind when I think of how the double-standard of IOKIYAR - "It's OK if You're a Republican" - still holds true.

“Maybe you do not care much about the future of the Republican Party. You should. Conservatives will always be with us. If conservatives become convinced that they can not win democratically, they will not abandon conservatism. The will reject democracy.

No matter what Trump does, it's OK, because it's worth breaking the law, breaking the constitution, purposefully breaking that lofty ideal that all are equal under the eyes of the law, because to them, conservatism is more important than democracy.

It's as if they're under his spell. It reminds me of some apocalyptic scenario where the anti-Christ fools many people into thinking he is good. Happily, his supporters are Christian so that couldn't possibly be the case. Strange.

I suppose. What I do know is a bunch of folks can be deceived by a dude who ain't right and ain't good for our republic. He certainly has nothing do with the kingdom of Christ. It's shameful. I don't get it, honestly.

I know how you feel. I tried to tell people about this man before he was elected. It was plain as day to me. But you know how people cannot admit that they chose wrong. :sigh: They believe more in him than they believe in Jesus Christ. Talk about idolatry!

Those supporting Donald Trump's lies are not conservatives.

A true conservative would respect the 240 year old tradition of respecting the people's vote and the peaceful transfer of power.

2nd paragraph:

"Despite having lost, the Defendant was determined to remain in power. So for more than two months following election day on November 3, 2020, the Defendant spread lies that there had been outcome-determinative fraud in the election and that he had actually won. These claims were false, and the Defendant knew that they were false. But the Defendant repeated and widely disseminated them anyway—to make his knowingly false claims appear legitimate, create an intense national atmosphere of mistrust and anger, and erode public faith in the administration of the election.

....and to this day, we see those lies repeated - on this very forum....

Yes, I don't care if it is Trump, Biden, Clinton, Nixon or anyone of high profile. Let justice prevail.

They really didn't. At least, not when it comes to US elections.

Actually look at what Trump did and what he was attempting to do concerning the outcome of the democratic process for the 2020 election.
Digest that, and consider the implications of what it would mean if that had been successful.
Then try to honestly make the claim that anyone else did anything worse.
