  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

The patriarch Abraham himself before receiving circumcision had been declared righteous on the score of faith alone: before circumcision, the text says, “Abraham believed God, and credit for it brought him to righteousness.”

(John Chrysostom, Cited from Fathers of the Church, Vol. 82, Homilies on Genesis 18-45, 27.7 [Washington, D.C.: The Catholic University of America Press, 1990], 167.)

Chrysostom: "Again, they said that he who adhered to faith alone was cursed, but he shows that he who adhered to faith alone, is blessed."

While it is true that Abraham believed God, so he was justified (Genesis 15:6), it is also true that he believed God, so he obeyed God's command to offer Isaac (Hebrews 11:17), so the same faith by which he was justified was also expressed as obedience to God, but he did not earn his justification as a wage as the result of his obedience (Romans 4:1-5). In James 2:21-24, it quotes Genesis 15:6 to support saying that Abraham was justified by his works when he offered Isaac, that his faith was active along with his works, and his faith completed his works, so he was justified by his works insofar as they were an expression of his faith, but not insofar as they were earning a wage.

From my own reading and study, I see the Father's held to different positions, and the Orthodox and RCs have largely ignored the evidence. Former EO priest Joshua Schooping confirmed my findings, the Orthodox ignore clear evidences for their dogma.

Please, don't get me going on Ariel Toll Houses and Icons. These are two examples of late traditions without grounding in the Father's.

Yours,

jm

My apologies. I didn't catch that this was a denomination specifc forum and blasted in earlier with some not-so-Lutheran opinions. I've subsequently been shown the eror of my ways. Peace.
No problem at all, I do know I and a few others struggle with Lutheranism, having a place to encourage is needed.

I see Abraham being justified by Faith - a living Faith that was not alone, but moved him to obedience.

I almost wonder if there is a better way to state things than Faith Alone? I think modern America has rested on Faith Alone too much, and looks like it now.

I understand Reformation times, and what they were pushing against was really bad stuff. Like in James he says the demons believe too - they have faith - but it's not a kind of faith that saves.
