  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

They can talk in the UN, both are already members there.

Actually, they can talk without any organisation, I think that both countries have phones/internet/presidents/diplomats. The problem is not a lack of space to talk in.

In the UN each country only gets one seat.

In European Parliament each country gets many seats.

More seats, more communication.

Thats irrelevant. They can have bilaterally as much communication as they want, they are not limited by any seats.

There are many complicated problems Russia and the European Union need to talk about.

It would be much easier if Russia was a member.
Thats not how it works.

Only democratic countries that are legally, culturally and economically compatible with the EU can be members of the EU. If any country wants to become a member of the EU, such country must make the needed changes first.

For most countries yes.

But Russia is a major European power.

Russia should have been given automatic membership in 1993.

No, Russia does not belong to the EU, because its not a developed and stable democracy. Its also very poor and many Russian people would immediately relocate to the EU countries. Therefore, Russia is also economically incompatible with the EU.

You also seem to ignore that only a very small part of Russia is in Europe, the most of it is in Asia and those states of the Russian federation are culturally, economically and politically totally different from Europe.

Being a military power is not enough for some automatic EU membership, or else China, India or USA would be in, too.

The countries of the former Soviet Union were not in a condition to join the EU. Many countries of the former Soviet Union worked hard and achieved the required standards and joined the EU in 2004 (Hungary, Czech rep, Poland, Slovakia and others) and also after that.

Russia decided to go in another direction.

Most of Russia’s population lives on the European side of Russia.

They are European Christians.

Claiming to be Christians and behaving like Christians are two different things.

Anyway, being a Christian country is not a direct requirement for the EU membership, though we may see it indirectly in the compatibility of culture, of legal systems or in democracy.

If we let Russia join they will become more democratic over time.

Again, thats not how it works.

First, a country must become more democratic, stable and developed over time. Then it can join.

Edit: Then it can apply to join. The final decision is on the EU countries, its not automatic in any way.

You can’t have NATO so close to the Russian border,
and lock Russia out of European Parliament.

Why not?

If countries close to Russian border were not afraid of the Russian weird aggressive rhetoric, they would have no reason to join NATO, for example Finland.

Russians can communicate and cooperate as much as they want. But it would help if they did not lie and did not invade some country during the talks.

There had been much cooperation between Russia and EU and even between Russia and NATO, in the past. Then, Russia decided to go the crazy way, to attack its neighbor and to play the bully towards other smaller bordering nations again.

No, I would rather move the whole Russia to Kentucky. Would you be for it, if they promised they will not eat all your chicken?
KFC and McDonalds were able to work with Russia for many years.

KFC was in Russia starting in 1993.

McDonalds was in Russia starting in 1990.
