The issue with robbery as opposed to burglary or even regular theft is that with robbery they use force or fear to take the property( therefore it may be hard to know for sure they are only after material items ( especially if the robber say suspected the victim was not being truthful about having handed over everything. Now, if we are talking about regular shoplifting/theft or even burglary I agree that deadly force should not be used and in fact unless the castle doctrine applies it will likely be found to be unreasonable use of force and therefore illegal.That’s another good point because timing is everything in that situation and if someone alerts the attacker that you have a gun they’ve just ruined your element of surprise. Personally I could care less about a robbery, I’m not going to intervene to save someone’s material possessions. I would only act if someone’s life is at risk.
