I think all ex-pres and ex-vp's need to look in their closets and look for documents.

I think that's likely what Pence's lawyer was doing (on Pence's behalf). And Pence being Gallant rather than Goofus, the docs were handed off to the authorities once discovered.

Well that is good then, at least they are being discovered and returned.

Confirmed in CNN's update.

Pence asked his lawyer to conduct the search of his home out of an abundance of caution, and the attorney began going through four boxes stored at Pence’s house last week, finding a small number of documents with classified markings, the sources said. [They were handed over to the FBI]

On Monday, Pence’s legal team drove the boxes back to Washington, DC, and handed them over to the Archives to review the rest of the material for compliance with the Presidential Records Act.

Pence’s Washington, DC, advocacy group office was also searched, Pence’s lawyer said, and no classified material or other records covered by the Presidential Records Act was discovered.

Neither Pence nor Biden should have had their lawyers doing this as their lawyers do not have the proper security clearances.

It's starting to feel like all of our elected leaders are the types of folks who leave their password on a post-it note taped to their monitor.

Not everyone takes the classified enclosure envelopes off as souvenirs.

Raise your hand if youre surprised.

US Govt waaay over classifies docs. No shock that they get caught up in the move-out. But you really should return them when asked without asserting god like powers such as "I can declassify them just by thinking it".

Well, I'm inclined to give Pence a pass on this. It kinda depends on just how classified the documents were, though. If they were just Confidential, no problem. But if they were TS/SCI/SI/TK/SAR/NOFORN/ZOMG/LOL, then I'll have some problems with it.

You can bet your bottom dollar that they are all rumaging around the attic, the garage and the basement as you read this. And my money says that more will be found.

No, he gets a DOJ investigation, just like everybody else.

This was decades ago, but there was an instance where someone bought a used signature machine. In those days, signature machines were analog, using a huge disk cut so that it formed a signature as it moved against a pantograph-like device. A pen in the holder then made the signature. This signature machine still had the signature disk. Curious, he put a pen in the holder and turned it on.

It was the signature of a former US President. Somehow, the old signature machine, with disk, ended up sold with other used government equipment.

In those days at least, rather than spend all day signing things, US Presidents often let the machine do it. There was some discussion that this may well have been a legal signature.

A few years back the company where I was working was dealing with a specific architect. And the boss called me in one time and asked what on earth I was doing approving his drawings. I was completely bemused. So he showed me one of of his layouts and there was my signature in the Approved box. And my signature is distinctive in that I sign my first name and use the initial of my last. As in Brad S for example. I had no answer, except that someone had, very accurately indeed, forged it. Anyway, the boss had to call the architect and apologise and I was in some strife.

Then I realised that the guy had the same first name as me but a different surname, but starting with the same letter. So I dug up some hard copy letters he'd sent us and the signature was identical to mine. You literally couldn't tell them apart.

That's not correct. Some of their lawyers do have the proper clearances. The CNN article says this about Pence: "Pence asked his lawyer with experience handling classified material to conduct the search of his home..." I'm not going to hunt them down but I've read similar things about Biden's lawyers, wherein those without clearances stopped as soon as they found something and were replaced by those with the proper clearances.

....I imagine lawyers for *all* former POTUS/VP's are going through closets....
Full disclosure; I was throwing out some fish that had gone bad and wrapped it in some classified documents I had laying around.
