Leaderboards? Is it good to encourage a competition of the most threads created?

Just not sure if that's a positive direction to go, so I've opened this thread up for discussion.

I think it's a good idea. But I can't see the staff ever doing it.

Competition in sports, business, and other areas in life help to improve our physical, natural, and mental abilities …. But I am pretty sure God is not looking at the leader boards as a criteria for rewards or crowns.

Substance and heart in a posts ….should be our incentive …but I understand for advertising, that members, views, and post numbers are important in marketing …. From the CF perspective.

IMHO it is a good idea! To me it is not so much about

competition - more about active posters seeing their

efforts recognized!

That's not a very good reason for Christians.

The desire to see efforts recognized is a facet of the ego, or flesh nature, so cultivating that would actually be a bad reason. That is, if we're trying to cultivate godliness and such.

My reservation is that it might encourage people to create lots and lots of threads, instead of a few well-thought-out threads. However, I haven't yet been able to find the leaderboard you've described (it's probably around here somewhere, I just haven't found it yet). If it's fairly well-hidden, then it probably won't influence people's behavior much, making it harmless.

I agree. It's well hidden enough that it doesn't cause problems. If we had a weekly competition that showed up on the main page of the site I might complain.

The staff just added it to encourage to post. Posting is the most important part of a message board it's the difference between an active board or an inactive one that nobody wants to read. The more people posting here the more ways to spread the gospel imo.

I'm dead set against the Leaderboard concept.

It encourages trivial posting and has the effect of crowding other posts off the page.

When someone posts they have a reasonable expectation that their post will remain on the visible list (i.e., the first page) for a reasonable time. Mass postings, like the recent unfortunate event, have the effect of quickly pushing a post down the page and out of immediate view reducing the likelihood of a response.

Leaderboards only encourage mass postings.

I would only be against it if arbitrary posting became a problem. However, we've had the "blessing" system since before I joined 15 years ago and one could say that also encourages arbitrary posting and liking to get the highest amount of blessings but that's never been an issue.

I'm curious, did the developers add anything we can spend our blessings on like in the old days?

They were talking about adding an avatar creator like before but I haven't heard much news on it.

My understanding is they are considering it. I'm curious as to why they got rid of it to begin with lol.

probably why they got rid of a lot of features. It was hard to maintain, and the forumware was getting old and not secure enough.

I lost count of how many times the site was reported to not exist, only to come back when I pressed re-load.
