By contrast, Trump has not announced he is running in 2024 and we are still over two years from the next Presidential election. Trump was contacted last fall/winter that he had not turned over documents from his Presidency to the National Archives, as is required by law. While Trump claimed to comply, when he turned boxes over in January, we know now that he did not turn over all the documents he was required to.

We have learned from Pres. Trump that they had a meeting at Mar-a-Lago in June where Trump claimed to have more documents that needed to be turned over in his basement. We know the National Archives asked to have them better secured in that basement and keep them for them. News now is claiming that there was an informant working at Mar-a-Lago who claimed there were yet more documents that weren't included in that basement stash. Due to this -- and the fact that the National Archives had spent months already trying to recover documents that Pres. Trump was legally obligated to turn over prior to leaving the White House, they talked to the FBI about getting the documents for them. The FBI then got the search warrant because Pres. Trump had reportedly not cooperated (all the documents should have been with the boxes turned over in January).

If Hillary had responded, like Trump has, you would have seen search warrants. Instead, Trump didn't fully cooperate with the National Archives, which directly led to the search warrant.

It reemphasized at the end of the filing that “the former President should have an opportunity to respond to this Motion and lodge objections, including with regards to any ‘legitimate privacy interests’ or the potential for other ‘injury’ if these materials are made public.”


The ball is in Trump's court. Will he challenge the motion by the DOJ? He has until 1500 Friday to respond.

This also has led to lots of commentary about the head of DOJ of a President interfering with his bosses most likely political rival and how this is unprecedented.

We are learning that there have been talks going on and it looks like this was unnecessary. So draw your own conclusions about what Garland and the FBI were thinking. If they don't have anything of substance they have just furthered the narrative that Trump has been the victim of unfair investigations. If they arrest him I hate to see the reaction that will cause. Either way I don't think this turns out good for the FBI.

If I have classified documents in my home and ignore a federal court's subpoena to hand over all of the documents, I certainly would expect the FBI to come knocking on my door. What is so sinister about the FBI retrieving classified information?
