I do this sometimes, too. I try to picture myself holding whatever the burden is, and handing it over to Jesus, and watching my hands let go of it.

Great idea! Reading all these posts makes me realise how lucky we are to have a faith in such a loving God. I feel so sorry for people who don't have that.

Then in Jesus' name, it will NOT become so!

You're so welcome. I have a lifetime's experience with worry and anxiety lol.

Thanks. It's good for me that your advice is tried and tested then!

Reading all this really has helped. It's hard to believe sometimes that God really does care about us and that He wants to help us in every aspect of our lives, even the mundane. I think sometimes we may think that we are burdening God or being selfish if we cast our cares and worries onto Him or perhaps we are frightened to in case we find He doesn't deal with them. Perhaps when we hand our problems over to God we need to trust His promise that He will help us and know that the outcome is safe in His hands even though it may not be the result we are expecting or hoping for.

I totally agree. Many of us - if not most of us - are used to feeling like a bother if we look to people around us for help or support or reassurance. It's just the opposite with Jesus. He wants us to bring every little worry, issue, fear, question, and doubt to Him!

That's a great point. He wants us to, and so we should and our relationship with Him will only get better if we do. It's so counter-cultural though.

I'm in the middle of moving house at the moment, lots of things are going wrong and it's becoming pretty stressful. I'm trying to think how I can use my faith to help me and wondered if anyone has any practical tips or advice to offer? It would certainly be appreciated :)

I found a few Bible verses that speak about anxiety:

Philippians 4:6-7, “but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.”

And Philippians 4:8-9 which tells us to practice awareness of our thoughts and take them captive:

“Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is commendable, if there is any excellence, if there is anything worthy of praise, think about these things. What you have learned and received and heard and seen in me—practice these things, and the God of peace will be with you”

Would anyone like to share how they deal with anxiety?
I find a stiff drink and a Xanax goes a long way towards curing anxiety. Kidding, kidding. Prayer and reading of scripture can be quite helpful. We must remind ourselves that everything that happens in the world is God's will. When we take a step back and trust in his will, that goes a long way towards curing anxiety. In fact, you cited the main verse in philippians, worry for nothing.

This prayer has helped me:

Lord, help to accept the things I cannot change,
The courage to change the things I can,
and the wisdom to know the difference

and then try to be still and know He is God Rom. 8:28

I would say we need to include the first part of this scripture >

"Be anxious for nothing" > and feed on what "nothing" means! :)

"Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God; and the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus." (Philippians 4:6-7)

If you would like to have a message of about thirteen minutes about living in God's peace, look up "obey God in His peace" in YouTube. This has scriptures, including about how we have this peace by sharing as family with one another . . . not on our own!

I drink tea, and read the word of God. Or I listen to relaxing music. I try not to think that much about the problem since I know our God will take care of it. Hot baths help a lot.

The less I think about myself, the more space I give the holy spirit.

I actually often listen to church music, especially some of the ancient church chant and divine liturgies of the various Eastern and Oriental Churches. I also tend to sing a bit of it as well as do other things like chant the psalms, and some canticles from the New Testament etc. Try it, you may like it too.

Boy can I relate to what you are going through ;o)

I'm moving to ... major life change ... selling my house of 30 years ... down sizing from over 1800 square feet into a 5th wheel (400 sq ft) .... getting rid of 30 years of "stuff".

In July when just getting ready to list my home for sale .... major "freak" flood hit my property .... washed in a bunch of debris took almost two months to get it cleared out. For about a month could barely get into my house.

Now have my home under contract (hopefully it will fly) ... in the meantime transmission goes out in my truck .... of which I need to move with. 3-4 weeks to get fixed because of COVD ... causing back-log on transmission rebuilds being available, not to mention the cost to be fixed.

Water leak under house had to be fixed ..... 2 days later hot water heater goes out and had to be replaced.

I had planned to be completely moved before winter hit ... but lost time due to the flood.

Major snow storm hit day before yesterday.

Gets very overwhelming and frustrating at times .... day at a time ... day at a time is all I know.

May the Lord help us all through our struggles. In Jesus name. Amen.

That first passage has all you need to know. First, pray persistently for God's blessing. Second, when things go wrong, unload your anxiety on God. That is, follow the Apostle Peter's instructions in 1 Peter 5:6-9. He says for us to throw our anxieties at the Lord in prayer. Express them openly and honestly to him, and keep doing that kind of prayer that David said to God in about half of the psalms until God gives you his peace about your situation. Third, follow Peter's advice to resist the devil, who has been trying to foul up your life. Claim Jesus' victory to defeat the devil; for his life, death, and resurrection has released a lot more power to you as a believer than Satan has at his disposal as a fallen angel. Fourth, once he resolves your circumstance, thank him with that kind of prayer.

Our trials and struggles build perseverance. I must have more perseverance than anyone else on this site. Things go wrong when you move, its just one of those things. Timings, things getting damaged or lost, costs going up, etc. You need to factor in these things are going to happen.

You can read and meditate on these scriptures that I put together when I am stressed:

Peace, joy, rest, sound mind:

Isa 26:3    Thou wilt keep him in perfect peace, whose mind is stayed on thee: because he trusteth in thee.

Php 4:6    do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God.

Php 4:7    And the peace of God, which passeth all understanding, shall keep your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.

Psa 34:4    I sought the LORD, and he heard me, and delivered me from all my fears.

Isa 41:10    fear not, for I am with you; be not dismayed, for I am your God; I will strengthen you, I will help you, I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.

Joh 14:27    Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you. Not as the world gives do I give to you. Let not your hearts be troubled, neither let them be afraid.

Joh 16:33    I have said these things to you, that in me you may have peace. In the world you will have tribulation. But take heart; I have overcome the world."

Mat 11:28    Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.

Mat 11:29    Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls.

Rom 14:17    For the kingdom of God is not meat and drink; but righteousness, and peace, and joy in the Holy Ghost.

(And we’re in His kingdom right now)

Col 1:13    Who hath delivered us from the power of darkness, and hath translated us into the kingdom of his dear Son:

Rom 15:13    Now the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, that ye may abound in hope, through the power of the Holy Ghost.

2Ti 1:7    For God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind.

Rom 8:15    For you did not receive the spirit of slavery to fall back into fear, but you have received the Spirit of adoption as sons, by whom we cry, "Abba! Father!"

Isa 53:4    Surely he hath borne our griefs, and carried our sorrows: yet we did esteem him stricken, smitten of God, and afflicted.

1Pe 5:6    Humble yourselves, therefore, under the mighty hand of God so that at the proper time he may exalt you,

1Pet 5:7    casting all your anxieties on him, because he cares for you.

I realize that anxiety brings despair. Then despair could make one discouraged. Before long, one can find no hope.

Think oneself through the night, restless tossing on the bed make one just get not enough sleep. Even when one is tired,
there is that anxious thoughts and feelings that don’t let one get sleep. Then I realize that if my will is to sleep, then whose will that want me to stay awake and be anxious??
I find anxiety is not of me, but it is from outside that seek to disturb me.

Anxiety is demonic ! The wicked spirit of anxiety likes to bring its friends: despair, discouraged, and hopeless into one’s house.
I don’t like that ! I don’t welcome them ! I submit myself to the Lord Jesus Christ and
I resist them in the mighty name of our Lord Jesus Christ.

I know I need peace in my mind and heart, and away from those anxious thoughts and feelings. Then I pray that the Lord will give me His peace, I admit I have concerns about certain matters, but I will not give in to be anxious. I trust the Lord will carry me through and help.

If I find myself caught off guard in despair, I begin to praise for His redemption and for His faithfulness. I am thankful that He gives me His grace of repentance and His victory that comes from Him.

This promise of His, I find comfort:
For your name's sake, ADONAI, preserve my life; in your righteousness, bring me out of distress.-Psalms 143:11 CJB
In your grace, cut off my enemies; destroy all those harassing me; because I am your servant.
-Psalms 143:12 CJB

If I find myself discouraged, I meditate on the precepts that the Holy Spirit have given the apostle Paul in 2 Corinthians 4:16-18.

If find myself no hope, I confess with my mouth and believe in my heart that I put hope in His words, as written in Psalm 119:49-56.

This I testify that the Lord’s righteousness do brings me out of distress. Set your trust in His steadfast love. His banner over us is love; For God gives us victory through His Son, Jesus Christ our beloved.
Don’t resist the Holy Spirit when He convicts us of our sins, just respond by accepting His grace of repentance by confessing our sins and the Holy Spirit will guide us to the truth of His love. His truth will set us from the power of the enemies and we can be found in His love.

Just a general question - this isn't how I'm feeling. What would you say to someone who was so full of desperation or fear, anything like that, that they found literally nothing helps them at all, that everything they tried like praying or trying to think about their suffering in a more "spiritual" way did not console them or make them feel better in any way. Is it actually possible that sometimes we can ask for peace and comfort yet not receive it? This does seem to go against what Scripture says about asking and receiving. Or is it that the suffering person is doing something wrong?

Sorry, not a cheery question but I would like to know how faith can help us when we are feeling like this.
