• The General Mental Health Forum is now a Read Only Forum. As we had two large areas making it difficult for many to find, we decided to combine the Mental Health & the Recovery sections of the forum into Mental Health & Recovery as a whole. Physical Health still remains as it's own area within the entire Recovery area.

If you are having struggles, need support in a particular area that you aren't finding a specific recovery area forum, you may find the General Struggles forum a great place to post. Any any that is related to emotions, self-esteem, insomnia, anger, relationship dynamics due to mental health and recovery and other issues that don't fit better in another forum would be examples of topics that might go there.

If you have spiritual issues related to a mental health and recovery issue, please use the Recovery Related Spiritual Advice forum. This forum is designed to be like Christian Advice, only for recovery type of issues. Recovery being like a family in many ways, allows us to support one another together. May you be blessed today and each day.

I will tell you an example similar to mine because of my ocd. A guy is being told by his ocd to do an ocd ritual in a shop that sells light bulbs. He cant ignore his ocd, so, in order to fight it and force himself NOT to do the ritual, he rushly, makes a promise to God that would force him NOT to the tiring compulsion

He says to God that he will never bother himself again with that shop, because his ocd was telling him to do an ocd ritual in that shop, so, in order to fight his ocd, he made a rushed promise to God not to bother again with that shop.

Did he broke the promise just because he accidentally, randomly, saw a photo of that shop on the internet?

No !!! !!! !!!

Anyway why doesn't he retain the option to go in there and just adjust the parameters around the rituals?

I make an arrangement with myself that I'll miss or skip my "usual" action (e.g picking up a few major items of rubbish in my street as I pass) "every other time" and then I add a rider that I "give myself permission" to skip it an extra time over & above that "whenever I want".

Frankly it's nice not bothering, sometimes.

I note your hearing is acute and you are very intuitive. Those are good gifts. Please be at ease with your individuality.

How so?:scratch:.... I take it
He's read the story on Ananias and Sapphira as well before!?

Anyway i'll say this over and over again if i have to, God has given us a spirit of Power love and a sound mind and not a spirit of heaviness.

A model I think very good is to not "promise God" things but merely make rather flexible, practical "arrangements with myself", always very happy to accept my chopping and changing the details. Chopping and changing these things is not a let-down, it's a kind of ritual in itself. A dance almost. Something enjoyable to be pleased with oneself about. I often hope ideas of this kind will catch on more widely.

Have you read Genesis 37-50? Joseph was in a horrible situation, but God used that for what God wanted. So, it would be wise for Joseph not to make any promises to himself, about what to do with that situation, because God would do better with Joseph, than Joseph could do with himself.

So . . . like this . . . I would say . . . do not limit yourself to how you can promise, but be open to God and enjoy discovering how He does things with you :)

And in case you make a rash promise to yourself, admit to God that you were wrong, then trust Him to do what He wants with you.

If you are considering your promise, I also want to ask: Have you considered God’s promises ?
Why? Well, God made more promises before you make yours.
Have you stand in God’s promises and believe ?
Why don’t you consider God’s promises FIRST ?

A promise made under duress is not binding.
