I go outside and proclaim the day. I hope that believers will ask me, "what in the world were you doing last night;" that so I can explain it to them. Maybe I should go downtown, and sound it on a street corner.
Good idea. That would definitely spark some interest.

Maybe he can do it like this!:

That was very impressive. I'm no where near that accomplished on shofar. I mostly play stringed instruments. Shofar and song flute are the only two wind instruments that I play.

I bought a really nice shofar at a Jewish supply store; but I've seen them on Ebay too. Since then Ive read that how many notes one can get out of them depends on the shofar; that they all have their own distinct qualities. Based on my knowledge of the acoustic qualities of different materials, sizes, and shapes; I would have to agree with them having their own individual acoustic qualities. As far as not being able to get the same number of notes (not the pitch of the scale) ; I wonder. This is new information for me; and I haven't tested that information. I had trouble playing mine because the port was too small. I was considering cutting off the end, to enlarge the port. I realized that this would change the sound, and that it would be permanent. I decided not to alter the instrument until I had a better understanding of it. It might have been tuned by the maker of it. Instead I made a plastic mouthpiece that slips on. I can now easily play it; but it did change the sound dramatically. The pitch dropped. I'm OK with that.

Hark,

Do you live in a Christian neighborhood or area with many believers? Is your downtown residential or strictly commercial?

I’ve never heard of anyone blowing a shofar outside in our area. The city requires street performers to have a license. You can’t take an instrument outdoors and start playing. The same holds true for singing and preaching. If someone complains (and we do) they’ll be fined. I believe it relates to noise laws.

Yours in His Service,

~Bella

I live in the country. I could drive to my nearest small town, which is too small for the objective. I'd have to drive to the Big City.

The license thing is outrageous. I don't think that Texans would stand for it; but it would be best to look into it before getting the information in the form of a citation.

Hark,

I live in a large city. The license preserves order and quality of life for the residents. Otherwise you’d be inundated with noise at all hours.

Even in the country we have noise ordinances. They work fine while respecting our freedom.

Black’s Law Dictionary defines "license" as, "The permission by competent authority to do an act which without such permission, would be illegal."

It works well that way. If someone is disturbing others; the police come and gives him a chance to correct it, before taking action. Do the people in your city need to get licenses to run around town blowing their plastic "New Year's Day" horns? If not, Jews and Messianics might have a case for religious discrimination, for licensing for horns regarding our "holiday."

Hark,

The Jewish synagogues I've attended and those in walking distance blow the shofar indoors. I've never heard anyone raise the issue of discrimination. :)

You're touching on my point. Drunken New Year's party goers blow their horns in the street on their "holy day," with what appears to be immunity from disregarding any licenses or permits.
