Hospitals in Boston filling up

If 10% of those are in ICU (I can’t verify that percentage), then that is 39, which doesn’t sound like a lot, BUT ICU beds are not only for COVID-19 patients and our ICUs are generally not empty (think of critical care heart attacks, strokes, emergency heart bypass patients, etc. who continue to need care whether or not there is a pandemic on top of it) so not every ICU bed on the books is available AND we are still early on in the pandemic. The peak is not here, and as cases continue to grow there is a good chance that in many areas our hospitals will be overwhelmed, unless we space these cases out by reducing the rate of spread. Even if we can find enough new equipment and space to meet the demand, it would not be that easy to find additional trained staff to monitor all those patients (critical care medicine, ICU nursing, respiratory therapy, etc. all require extensive schooling which can’t be done overnight).

I can give a vague example. I received a call at work this weekend where they were taking over beds elsewhere to assist the ICU. They needed technical assistance.

The state, NH is just North of Massachusetts.

I meant in my hospital system and my county. NH is having rising numbers, and the county just south of me has a large number. We have only had 11 confirmed cases in my county so far (though keep in mind that NH is a small state, and my county only has a total population of 128000), but that doubled in just 3 days.

Plus NH has a large demographic that works in Mass. This could lead to more exposures. Boston is high because of the density of population which you already know.

One of my daughters lives in North Hampton, Rockingham Cty where most cases are the last time I checked.

Yeah, Rockingham is up to 100 cases as of yesterday. Strafford, where I am has 17 now (the 11 I quoted earlier was a few days out of date). I pray that your daughter stays safe and well.

Yes, here in Mass they are thinking of taking over some nursing homes.
