That's just another gotcha question with no satisfactory answer. Very sinister...er, clever.
We have such low expectations of this President that it is now "sinister" to expect him to act "presidential!"

I would have answered the question differently but the press brought that on themselves.

Sure, just like battered wives are responsible for the violence.

Just intelligent people with foolish questions. ;)

Agreed -- nothing could be more foolish than to expect Donald to reassure the country in a time of crisis. ;)

And that would be reasonable. But not for Donald, unfortunately.

Everyone is different. People often get testy when they are being constantly criticized for every move they make and every word they utter is microscopically examined to find a way to take offence with it.

That's basically the job description of being President.

Being testy?

No, I mean the part about having people judging your every word and being ready to criticize you for literally any aspect of your life. If you can't handle that without getting angry then you're probably not temperamentally suited for the job. To be honest I don't know how anyone handles it, I'd spent 90% of my life angry if I was under that spotlight.

I think you have it backwards. We have low expectations of ourselves. That's the problem.

What if he cannot honestly provide that reassurance? At this point things look pretty grim. Remember Churchill.

It takes a certain character flaw to be attracted to wielding power. There are only a very few people that can handle wielding power responsibly without becoming intoxicated by it and they would have to be dragged kicking and screaming into such an office as President. Those who seek out such a position are not to be trusted with too much power. That is why I like the Constitution of the US so much as it creates a system that pits those kind of people against each other and reduces their ability to use that power as they wish.

A reasonably intelligent person would realize that being the President of the United States is pretty much the poster child for that kind of treatment.

If half the world doesn't want to burn you in effigy, you're not doing it right.

Indeed they do look grim. But they will get better.

And even if they won't, Donald picked the worst possible time to forget how to lie.

Because there's a word for that kind of lie: Hope.

If Donald can't provide it, he's got no business being president.

This is a question asked by an ABC reporter the other day....how would people here have answered it?

“What do you say to Americans who are watching you right now who are scared?”

What say you...?

I didn’t hear his tone when he said this but just reading it I don’t see anything wrong with his response. I think many people here would attack any response he would make solely because they’re dead set on attacking him like he is the one responsible for this outbreak. If a meteor crashed into America killing thousands of people they’d blame Trump for it. I mean what sort of action could he have taken in the beginning when the number of reported infected people were so extremely low that would’ve stopped the spread? Coronavirus was completely unheard of before 4 months ago. So they didn’t have ways to test for it. Then the CDC came up with the first tests rather quickly that ended up not working properly and they had to go back and come up with a new test. It’s not Trump’s fault that the first tests didn’t work. The mechanisms were implemented in a very timely manner but people who want to attack the man don’t WANT to see that. The research for coming up with the tests take time and after they did it they had to go back and do it again. Again not Trump’s fault he’s not a virologist. He can only implement the course of action, it’s up to his subordinates to carry them out. Other than getting the tests out there as quickly as possible what else could he do? You can’t quarantine everyone in America who has a cold especially that early in the stages of the spread when the known numbers of infected were so low. Without the tests he couldn’t do much of anything and after the tests were finally available it’s not hard to believe that it might take a little while to make 328 million of them. So given that all this has taken place in less than 4 months of the first reported case in China on the opposite side of the world from us it seems to me that he is actually doing everything he can.

I didn’t hear his tone when he said this (snip)
the exchange is in the first 16 seconds of the above...as an aside, can you supply a scenario where the above exchange was a good one? You know, where the President of the United States in a press briefing, in the middle of a pandemic, when thousands of people are sick and dying, calls a reporter "a terrible reporter"?
tulc(is just curious)
