That's a strong statement, verging on the offensive. In my experience, it's false - I know a number of Muslims that are thoughtful and intelligent, and independent thinkers in many respects - as well as being solidly committed to their faith.By the way no one who actually uses his mind and thinks for himself can actually be a Muslim.
That’s actually a true statement when Muslims actually start becoming more intelligent, they start becoming more liberal in theology, moving in directions that Islam considers heresy or bida’ you may look no further then Shabir Ally. One cannot actively question and use your mind and remain in Orthodox Islam. Orthodox Islam even condemned rationalist thinking in interpreting the Quran and Sunnah, you may look no further then the disputes between Ahmed Ibn Hanbal and the Mu’tazilites. Also please define “solidly committed to their faith.” As that can have many meanings. That's a strong statement, verging on the offensive. You appear to be defining intelligence in terms of how liberal their belief system is, which is... unorthodox. If someone changes from a more liberal theology to a less liberal one, would you say their intelligence has decreased? That’s actually a true statement when Muslims actually start becoming more intelligent, they start becoming more liberal in theology, moving in directions that Islam considers heresy or bida’ you may look no further then Shabir Ally.
People are adept at compartmentalizing different aspects of their lives. Many intelligent people have dogmatic religious beliefs that are nonsensical or antithetical to those of other intelligent people who may have their own irrational beliefs. That someone has a belief system that they hold above question doesn't make them unthinking or stupid in other respects. One cannot actively question and use your mind and remain in Orthodox Islam. They give every appearance of closely following the tenets & requirements of their particular faith. Of course, I'm no expert; it's possible, though it seems unlikely, that they are putting a lot of effort into a pretence for some reason. Also please define “solidly committed to their faith.” As that can have many meanings.
What I’m claiming that the more intelligent Muslims become the more liberal they become and then finally they end up leaving once they realize their belief system can’t be reconciled with their intellect or personal views. Also if someone changes to a more conservative (Orthodox) view point of their belief I’d claim they’re intelligence decreased based on how logical their belief system is.You appear to be defining intelligence in terms of how liberal their belief system is, which is... unorthodox. What evidence do you have, other than anecdotal evidence or personal observation, that this is true? If all you have is anecdotal evidence or personal observation then you don't really have anything of substance. What I’m claiming that the more intelligent Muslims become the more liberal they become and then finally they end up leaving once they realize their belief system can’t be reconciled with their intellect or personal views.
