Is the Holy Spirit a Person?
Yes. He has the same nature as the Father and Jesus. He represents Jesus in us until Jesus comes again. We can pray to Him, and He will speak to our hearts.

Many treat the Holy Spirit as some sort of mist that hovers over people. This is an insult to Him, and people who believe it and talk about Him in those terms are in real danger of speaking against the Holy Spirit.

Yes. God the Father is a person, God the Son is a person, God the Holy Spirit is a person. Three persons, one God.

Some people in our day are a bit fuzzy on this and almost view the Holy Spirit as a kind of mystical force, but that's not how the Bible speaks of the Holy Spirit. You can find a good example of the person and works of the Holy Spirit in John 16.

Yes! The Holy Spirit is the third Person of the Godhead. He was involved in Creation. He has all the attributes of God as a Person, who knows, feels and acts.

“I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Counselor to be with you forever—the Spirit of truth. The world cannot accept him, because it neither sees him nor knows him. But you know him, for he lives with you and will be in you.” [John 14:16-17]

"The grace of the Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God, and the communion of the Holy Ghost,
be with you all. Amen." [2 Corinthians 13:14]

"Now we have received, not the spirit of the world, but the spirit which is of God; that we might know the things that are freely given to us of God. Which things also we speak, not in the words which man's wisdom teacheth, but which the Holy Ghost teacheth; comparing spiritual things with spiritual." [1 Corinthians 2:13-14]

How can He be grieved if He is a non-Person? How can He be sent? How can He teach?

Is the Holy Spirit a Person?

Christianity since the ancient times tends to translate the term hypostasis as "person" in English. This root word incidentally is also where we get the word hypocrite from.

The term was lifted from the theater where the actors of Greco Roman plays tended to wear masks when they assumed the role a particular character. The term refers to the HS as having a personality, will etc. like a human would but not being incarnate like the Son. This is really only significant because many Jews, or other groups etc. might think of the Holy Spirit as a force or manifestation like the manifestation of the Shekinah glory of the OT, rather than an actual being.

The angel replied, “The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you. So the Holy One to be born will be called the Son of God.

Behold, a virgin shall conceive, and bear a son, and shall call his name Immanuel.

(Luke 1:35, Isaiah 7:14)

I couldn’t agree with the Theologian’s label more, a “divine substitute” while the temptation to err (controversy) should cease since it is plain, God the Holy Spirit is not Jesus’ Father,

Beware lest anyone cheat you through philosophy and empty deceit, according to the tradition of men, according to the basic principles of the world, and not according to Christ. For in Him dwells all the fullness of the Godhead bodily; and you are complete in Him, who is the head of all principality and power.

(Colossians 2:8-10)

With that in mind, I now wonder if we Trinitarians haven’t worked to document away from the true person of the Holy Spirit and that “fullness” that is Christ’s concerning Him?

I ask from the OP onward, any holding a faint glimmer of truth, we say 'these Three', indeed, as stated. Then advise, the traits that the Holy Spirit are known by sometimes, can also be seen as Christ's traits too. Is it wise for sake of clarity to let these remain more a compiling of the three fully separate, than singular traits of the One and true God? Somehow, I wonder if fear prevents us from allowing the fuller consent of scripture than we do of man?

Christians worship one God revealed in three persons, Father, Son and Holy Ghost.

There is no better explanation of the trinity than in the words of the Athanasian Creed:

"for there is one Person of the Father; another of the Son; and another of the Holy Ghost. But the Godhead of the Father, of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost, is all one; the Glory equal, the Majesty coeternal. Such as the Father is; such is the Son; and such is the Holy Ghost. The Father uncreated; the Son uncreated; and the Holy Ghost uncreated. The Father unlimited; the Son unlimited; and the Holy Ghost unlimited. The Father eternal; the Son eternal; and the Holy Ghost eternal. And yet they are not three eternals; but one eternal. As also there are not three uncreated; nor three infinites, but one uncreated; and one infinite. So likewise the Father is Almighty; the Son Almighty; and the Holy Ghost Almighty. And yet they are not three Almighties; but one Almighty. So the Father is God; the Son is God; and the Holy Ghost is God. And yet they are not three Gods; but one God. So likewise the Father is Lord; the Son Lord; and the Holy Ghost Lord. And yet not three Lords; but one Lord"

The Nicene Creed summarises the role and work of the Holy Ghost: "the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son. With the Father and the Son He is worshipped and glorified. He has spoken through the Prophets."

The concept of the trinity is brought up again and again in the scriptures. In his closing greeting in 2 Corinthians 13:14, Paul wrote "May the grace of the Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God, and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit be with you all". Jesus commanded his disciples to "go and make disciples of all nations, baptising in the name of the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit" (Matthew 28:29). He said "I will ask the Father and He will give you another advocate to help you and be with you forever, the Spirit of Truth. The world cannot accept Him, because it neither sees Him or knows Him, but you know Him for He lives with you and will be in you".

The Holy Spirit is the third person of the Trinity. He is our Helper and Comforter. He leads us into all truth and powers us and equips us to live as Jesus' disciples. He can be welcomed by us, or resisted and grieved. He is our teacher and convicts us of sin and righteousness. It is through the work of the Holy Spirit that we grow in the Christian life and bear fruit. We become more loving, gentle and peaceful, showing understanding, compassion and care to those around us. We become more modest and humble, less self-centred and more Christ-centred. We become more self controlled and more forgiving.

The role of the Holy Spirit is to enable us to overcome sin in our lives and to help become more holy. When we have fellowship with the Holy Spirit, we will feel drawn to doing the things that pleases Him and less inclined to pursue our own selfish sinful desires. We are like the clay and He the potter. He gently moulds us and forms us so we walk, talk, and live our lives so we reflect Jesus. When we are truly living in the Spirit, our ministry gets transformed. He gives us gifts to equip us for our ministry. To some He gives words of wisdom, others words of knowledge, gifts of healing, miracles, prophecy, tongues and interpretations of tongues. Other gifts include serving, teaching, exhortation, giving, leadership and mercy.

The true test of whether someone is truly in the faith and living for Jesus is whether they show the fruits of the Holy Spirit who is living within them. Without these fruits our faith is dead. We may have the best theology, the best doctrine and practices, even the best "ministries" but without developing the fruits of the Spirit, it amounts to nothing. When we allow the Holy Spirit to work in our lives and develop fruit in us, not only do we ourselves become transformed, but our lives begin to touch others around us.

In my daily prayers and regular worship at church, I am always reminded that we love and serve one God in Three Persons, Father, Son and Holy Spirit. In the words of the Gloria Patri, "Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost: As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen."

He is our Helper and Comforter.
Indeed! What does a trinitarian say to another trinitarian of such things to remain a tenable tradition?

Indeed, indeed, the narrative of Three are set through John, 1 John 5:7. Myself, I pack a theological list of 89-Biblical citations for the trinity. But how many of our counterpart are willing to subject themselves to the rigors for a defense if something of this sort becomes evident without the knee-jerk of first becoming prematurely identified as corrupt? Not saying you have but would be surprised if that isn’t the common most response.

Whether the controversies over 1 John 5:7 take the helm of singularly; the most questionable of all NT passages or not, doesn’t matter to me, there is plenty to back it up,

When the Advocate comes, whom I will send to you from the Father--the Spirit of truth who goes out from the Father--He will testify about Me.

(John 14:16)

Three as One , , and whether this was intended for the original twelve or not, there is plenty to dispense the blessing “to all” (Acts 2:39), who’s hearts are right with God. I guess my point here is I think a door of fear has allowed us to partition ourselves away from the One for the formalizing of the three.

Who is V-16’s “Advocate” when the Advocate who shows up elsewhere is none other than Christ?

My little children, I am writing these things to you so that you may not sin. And if anyone sins, we have an Advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous;

(1 John 2:1)

If any wants to contend with me, I am not here to contend, but to pursue. You who know the word well enough don’t have to contend with me. I’ll ask you simply to go back through the posts here of all those Holy Spirit traits Quietbloke included and tell me how many are to be referenced to the Holy Spirit and are His alone and not Jesus’ also?

Not to hijack the thread but can someone explain is God and Jesus and the Holy Spirit one person or three different? As in when I talk to God do all three know me or just the spirit? I always believed they were one God just different parts of him and now I’m confused. When we get to heaven will we see three gods or one?
