Is the Holy Spirit a Person?
Yes. He has the same nature as the Father and Jesus. He represents Jesus in us until Jesus comes again. We can pray to Him, and He will speak to our hearts. Is the Holy Spirit a Person?
Yes! The Holy Spirit is the third Person of the Godhead. He was involved in Creation. He has all the attributes of God as a Person, who knows, feels and acts.Yes. He has the same nature as the Father and Jesus. He represents Jesus in us until Jesus comes again. We can pray to Him, and He will speak to our hearts.
Many treat the Holy Spirit as some sort of mist that hovers over people. This is an insult to Him, and people who believe it and talk about Him in those terms are in real danger of speaking against the Holy Spirit.
Is the Holy Spirit a Person?
That is lovely to read, and heart warming. What a wonderful Lord we haveChristians worship one God revealed in three persons, Father, Son and Holy Ghost.
There is no better explanation of the trinity than in the words of the Athanasian Creed:
"for there is one Person of the Father; another of the Son; and another of the Holy Ghost. But the Godhead of the Father, of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost, is all one; the Glory equal, the Majesty coeternal. Such as the Father is; such is the Son; and such is the Holy Ghost. The Father uncreated; the Son uncreated; and the Holy Ghost uncreated. The Father unlimited; the Son unlimited; and the Holy Ghost unlimited. The Father eternal; the Son eternal; and the Holy Ghost eternal. And yet they are not three eternals; but one eternal. As also there are not three uncreated; nor three infinites, but one uncreated; and one infinite. So likewise the Father is Almighty; the Son Almighty; and the Holy Ghost Almighty. And yet they are not three Almighties; but one Almighty. So the Father is God; the Son is God; and the Holy Ghost is God. And yet they are not three Gods; but one God. So likewise the Father is Lord; the Son Lord; and the Holy Ghost Lord. And yet not three Lords; but one Lord"
The Nicene Creed summarises the role and work of the Holy Ghost: "the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son. With the Father and the Son He is worshipped and glorified. He has spoken through the Prophets."
The concept of the trinity is brought up again and again in the scriptures. In his closing greeting in 2 Corinthians 13:14, Paul wrote "May the grace of the Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God, and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit be with you all". Jesus commanded his disciples to "go and make disciples of all nations, baptising in the name of the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit" (Matthew 28:29). He said "I will ask the Father and He will give you another advocate to help you and be with you forever, the Spirit of Truth. The world cannot accept Him, because it neither sees Him or knows Him, but you know Him for He lives with you and will be in you".
The Holy Spirit is the third person of the Trinity. He is our Helper and Comforter. He leads us into all truth and powers us and equips us to live as Jesus' disciples. He can be welcomed by us, or resisted and grieved. He is our teacher and convicts us of sin and righteousness. It is through the work of the Holy Spirit that we grow in the Christian life and bear fruit. We become more loving, gentle and peaceful, showing understanding, compassion and care to those around us. We become more modest and humble, less self-centred and more Christ-centred. We become more self controlled and more forgiving.
The role of the Holy Spirit is to enable us to overcome sin in our lives and to help become more holy. When we have fellowship with the Holy Spirit, we will feel drawn to doing the things that pleases Him and less inclined to pursue our own selfish sinful desires. We are like the clay and He the potter. He gently moulds us and forms us so we walk, talk, and live our lives so we reflect Jesus. When we are truly living in the Spirit, our ministry gets transformed. He gives us gifts to equip us for our ministry. To some He gives words of wisdom, others words of knowledge, gifts of healing, miracles, prophecy, tongues and interpretations of tongues. Other gifts include serving, teaching, exhortation, giving, leadership and mercy.
The true test of whether someone is truly in the faith and living for Jesus is whether they show the fruits of the Holy Spirit who is living within them. Without these fruits our faith is dead. We may have the best theology, the best doctrine and practices, even the best "ministries" but without developing the fruits of the Spirit, it amounts to nothing. When we allow the Holy Spirit to work in our lives and develop fruit in us, not only do we ourselves become transformed, but our lives begin to touch others around us.
In my daily prayers and regular worship at church, I am always reminded that we love and serve one God in Three Persons, Father, Son and Holy Spirit. In the words of the Gloria Patri, "Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost: As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen."
Indeed! What does a trinitarian say to another trinitarian of such things to remain a tenable tradition? He is our Helper and Comforter.
