Supermarkets are always on sale. :screamcat: That's how businesses are being done. It will be useful for us if we happen to need something that is on sale. However the problem with human nature, is to over-buy and hence over-spend unnecessarily. I do buy things on sale, but I don't stock up a lot. Nowadays, companies are smart - by putting multiple items of the same product or similar brand together to make consumers buy more. For example, buy 2 get 1 free, or buy 5 product of the same brand at a discounted price, and save X amount of dollars. In doing so, they lure consumers to buy more than one item or product to expand their profit margin.

I believe that since the author of this thread is looking for ways in saving money and cost, it will be helpful if he considers various measures in his and/or his family lifestyle in order to achieve his goal. Buying detergent is just only a small thing out of everything.

I always believe in our Lord. He is my shepherd, I shall not want (Psalms 23). Meditate on His Word and it will set you free.

Blessings, and prayers for you and your family on overcoming your financial situation. :amen:

Yeah, as time goes on i do reduce my debt. I guess at some point i do just have to concede that no one ever gets completely out of debt and it is unlikely i move up the ladder of things that much no matter what i do. I'm sure your aware of the verse that says "no one is profitable (except Jesus Christ) and every one falls short of the glory of God". So i guess at some point in my life i have to find peace with the relationship i have with my family. As you well know finances, productivity, and resources do effect our relationships with other christians and other people, but a person's worth can really only be accurately measured by Jesus Christ. (100s of variables)

we don't have an emergency food shelf
what husband "stocks" up on are usually non food items like laundry detergent which he only buys on sale and usually enough to last until next sale- he saves quite a bit this way

the only food item he buys more than one is Cheerios when on sale and we do run out before the next good sale
we don't buy extra food we won't use

we do go blueberry picking every summer & freeze them which also saves money as the picked ones cost less

To be honest I'm on food stamps but my goal is to get off food stamps by reducing daily costs, increasing income (somehow), and reducing credit card debt. As for not wasting food that is definitely something i could do. I do try on occasion to get me and my family to cook smaller portions when we cook something. I find that fresh food is more likely to get eaten quicker and also encourages not going to mcdonalds. I find mcdonald's value menu to be cheaper than making certain types of dishes at home. I could restrict my self to kidney beans and rice more often but without alcohol, stress at work is best alleviated by quality food and little to no alcohol. I'm not completely against alcohol but for various personal reasons i try to limit it.

I remember when my friend gave me a packet of teabags which I put in my pocket and forgot about, until I put my clothes on a 60 degree wash.

I think it was the most interesting brew that I had ever made.

I'm guessing you didn't drink it right?

I did the same thing when I worked in the Middle East. I did the laundry in the shower and took a bath at the same time!

I don't have a tub washer and did laundry manually. Thankfully, due to the hot and dry desert climate, spin-drying is completely unnecessary!

Used basic Tide detergent, no fabric softener.
I lived in Kenya for a few years and did the same. the largest issue with it was what you end up doing is a lot of material on material rubbing and this is rough on the clothes. After which the clothes are twisted and pulled to get the water out then they were sun dried on a line, they had to be inside out because the sun was again to harsh on the clothes. in the end, what you get after a year is clothes that look like they are 10 years old.

I did a few times have access to a spinner which is just a machine that does the spin cycle and with the last 2 steps (wringing out and sun drying) it significantly helped preserve the clothes as a spinner was gentler and made the clothes dry enough to hang dry inside away from the bleaching sun.

So machines are not necessarily a greater expense it just depends on your needs. If @frogoon234 wanted to hand wash to save money I wouldn't go fully machineless unless I had to and would buy a clothes spinner to dry everything quicker and easier. you can buy cheap ones and even fully manual handle operated ones. this way you're saving on both washing and drying expenses.

Yes, I also washed and hanged and ironed the clothes inside out.

I hanged them in a shelter on the roof, NOT directly under the sun! :D And since it's well above the ground, dust is not problem unless there's a sand storm.

I still use the clothes I used in ME, couple of years now. All good actually. If there's a sandstorm I hang the clothes in front of the cold airconditioner in my bedroom. Believe it or not, they will dry in 4 hours (hand-wrung).

Is this a valid question for a christian forum absolutely.

Many of the churches in my local area offer shallow and unhelpful sermons and are filled with both hurting (not necessarily their fault) and on the other hand anti social people (not necessarily their fault). If i went to church and asked this question I would get mean looks. This is an online forum so it would be hard for any of you to give me mean looks. There has to be some plus side to living in a world filled with futuristic technology, right?

So seriously i'm looking for ways to save money (christians feel the need to go in the direction of possibly trying to pay their debts even if they never get around to doing that long and arduous task).

What is your favorite laundry detergent and why does it save you money and make your life easier?
Why do you think that asking this question of Christians at church would get you mean looks? I ask these kinds of questions at church all of the time.

Yeah, i wouldn't do this for clothes that i'm wearing to an office job.

Why do you think that asking this question of Christians at church would get you mean looks? I ask these kinds of questions at church all of the time.

The current church i go to i've only been going to for 2 months. There are various reasons, if you want to hear my personal story, i can private message you or email you. No wrong answer but considering this is an online forum, i do have to make these considerations. In short i would argue people go online to seek advice more these days and in many ways thats what people expect others to do. I'm a firm believer that the modern church is for checking off a box for your weekly duties. Fellowship is paramount for a christian but the Bible says that in the last days people will be lovers of themselves and that the love of a christian will grow cold. This isn't directed at you.

That doesn't really answer the question, as to why you think people at church would frown upon asking about the best laundry detergent. Like I said, those kinds of conversations happen at churches all of the time.

Tide!

Its very potent(so you dont need to use much when you are putting your loads), and it does really well with whites! (so you dont even need bleach!) And if you get one with also some sort of fabric softener in it then it saves even more!

thanks. Hopefully my wife doesn't use too much. I usually use soap sparingly in just about everything i clean. Perhaps to a fault.

Very different discussion. :)
But good!!
Arm and Hamner is probably a good choice.
I'm not against using soap in the shower ... we've all been there.

But seriously ... why are so many Christian families struggling with their weekly budgets? Us too!!
Because good jobs ... meaning real permanent good-paying jobs ... are super-hard to get in America. And because mortgages for houses are so very high.

Enough said??

Please ignore all the nonsense about the US economy 'doing great'. It is not!! Things were much more affordable for American families back in the 1960's or 1970's. Not now.

This is not a speech about pro-Trump or against-Trump. It is not pro-Dems or against-Dems. I have not seen one US politician, from either party, who knows how to get America back on track. Not one. I dont think we have any politicians who know the price of laundry soap. THAT is part of the problem. Please remember this when you vote.

Probably my home will go with Arm and Hammer. My wife and I just had the same discussion last week.

The trick is to use the half the recommended amount of detergent. Your clothes don't really need that much soap. For a large load, fill the cap up to the medium line. For a medium load, fill it up to the small line. This has made my 150FL Oz detergent last over a year now. Try to buy the one that says " ___%more," meaning, it's sold at the same price as the original but they added more liquid to it. It's a great deal.

thats why i was thinking ammonia for when i do a full set of laundry but when its the regular clothes i'll do the shower thing. Whether ammonia is cheaper than cheap laundry detergent i'm not sure.

Yeah, the shower is perfect for your undergarments...you know, light stuff. I mean, you can do it all in the shower, as you go, and if you got some good sunshine, just hang dry.

*All that other stuff is overrated.

Maybe workout for stress relief...play sports. That value menu may be cheaper, as far as money goes, but it pays a toll on your health...nothing wrong with dem beans n rice (complete protein). Also, cut out any pork and shellfish, they are a financial and energy drain.Fish is awesome, especially Salmon and tuna (albacore). All, "legalism"...Mosaic Law talk aside, the Biblical diet is the very best diet to have for your bodies health...proven fact. I mean, He created us, so yeah, He knows what is best for our bodies and He showed us...so.
