IS THAT the POV of the Christians who build shrines to Mary, pray the Rosary to Mary, name their cathedrals after her, and so on?

Or do they--if not other Christians--see her as the co-redemptrix of the world, as the most important intercessor between God and Man, and as one who has made specific promises to those who are devoted to her?
Your response touches on the value of looking to Mary where mine is in response to another poster suggesting Mary opposing these values. if this is true I'm saying manifesting tears in her statues would be counter productive to that goal as it would only bring more attention on her.

I'm not really sure if I should believe in that miracle. Whenever I see those pictures I'm a little wary of it.
There was a Christian gift store around here many years ago that reported a similar "miracle" with one of their crystal statues. It made for quite a marketing campaign, and they sold a lot of merchandise...until people figured it out. Now they're out of business.

I rank crying statues and paintings right up there with the Virgin Mary grilled cheese sandwich.

It's not the static I am referring to but the manifestions of her crying from images/statues that do not uniquely show her as sad. The image in the OP is a perfect example. The tear changes the context and presents her entire being as sad however without the tear she is welcoming, she is solemn she is worshipful but she is not sad.
I may not be following you there, but I thought the issue was about the artist representing Mary as sad...NOT about claims of the statues themselves miraculously weeping.

As for there being some disconnect--if that's the right way to put it--between being tearful and, at the same time, the personage looking serene except for the tear, I don't know.

Statues of Mary, like the one depicted, have been known to show miracles or phenomenon of her crying, sometimes even tears of blood. This typically gets the attention of thousands who flock to her to get a glimpse of this phenomenon but my question is why is she so sad? What is Mary trying to communicate by this action and how does it proclaim the glory of God?

A few thoughts -

First why is she sad - the visionaries at Lourdes Fatima and Kibeho report our lady being very sad because they say, she is sad for sinners, who do not heed their ways and too many are lost because there are none to pray and do sacrifices for them. "The sword still pierces her heart" today. She comes to warn us of the consequences of ignoring Gods words.
We are told in revelations 12 her (spiritual) offspring are those who keep the commandments is why she cares....

Second - several of the statues have undergone scientific analysis, both of our Ladys tears (for example the statue at Akita and others) and also our Lord's (the statue of cochabamba) which confirmed there were no microscopic passages and it was not a hoax or fraud. Tears really happened. Caught on camera. Inexplicable.

Third - (of course we can have the discussion as to whether it has to be in the bible to be true - another time) - but our Lord says in one passage
"the stones will cry out"

My opinion..
As both a postgrad and one time professional physicist and a lifelong student of these apparitions, who has a library of books and scientific papers:

I am convinced by the apparitions (and some of the other phenomena) , even though as a catholic I am not obliged to. The church i think regards them as more of an embarassment than a help - certainly whenever a new one is reported, the church reacts with hostility almost! Such as Bernadette and the fatima children were treated with hostility by the church and their parents, let alone the secular authorities!

But take The prophecy of the miracle of the sun - it is impossible to explain.
It really doesnt matter what created the phenonmenon in physics terms, the fact it was observed by so many , on a date prophesied months in advance , with a great manty atheist and sceptical witnesses also converted by it, even those miles away with no knowledge of the prophesy reported it, so it cannot have been "mass hypnosis".

Or at Zeitoun. Even now the technology does not exist to project a real image into free space, yet that is what was witnessed by MILLIONS....of all faiths and none, all professions, including solicitors and scientists. The power was turned off in the neighbour hood to destroy the "hoax" which had no effect!
And in 1969...lasers and holograms were still in the future, even though they cannot explain it.

The saddest thing is the apparitions have been about avertiing catastrophe, with the message of Penance.

Our lady predicted a worse war if man did not heed the message in 1917. She was right...and that russia (unknown then) would spread its errors around the world.Interesting that the final consecration coincided with Gorbachev and the falling of USSR

Yet we see in Kibeho our lady predicted rivers of blood in Rwanda, if men did not repent and stop hating.. And a few years later it was exactly what happened. A genocide in which millions hacked each other to bits with machetes. The rivers ran red with corpses. There were so many dead none was left to bury them. A fascinating book "left to tell" describes it, and how faith got the author through

In my view Zeitoun was trying to draw christians and moslems together, since Islam respects Meryem too... yet we see the copt church being openly attacked...

So her tears are sadness.
Weeping for mankind.
We are "The sword still pierces her heart"

JESUS, THE DIVINE MERCY
by St.Faustina

The Blessed Virgin Mary :

... you have to speak to the world about His great mercy and prepare the world for the Second Coming of Him who will come, not as a merciful Savior, but as a just Judge. Oh, how terrible is that day! Determined is the day of justice, the day of divine wrath. The angels tremble before it. Speak to souls about this great mercy while it is still the time for [granting] mercy. If you keep silent now, you will be answering for a great number of souls on that terrible day. (635)

Jesus looked at me and said, Souls perish in spite of My bitter Passion. I am giving them the last hope of salvation; that is, the Feast of My Mercy. If they will not adore My mercy, they will perish for all eternity. Secretary of My mercy, write, tell souls about this great mercy of Mine, because the awful day, the day of My justice, is near. (Diary - Divine Mercy in My Soul, 965)

Write down these words, My daughter. Speak to the world about My mercy; let all mankind recognize My unfathomable mercy. It is a sign for the end times; after it will come the day of justice. (848)

Souls who spread the honor of My mercy I shield through their entire lives as a tender mother her infant, and at the hour of death I will not be a Judge for them, but the Merciful Savior. At that last hour, a soul has nothing with which to defend itself except My mercy. Happy is the soul that during its lifetime immersed itself in the Fountain of Mercy, because justice will have no hold on it. (1075)

He who refuses to pass through the door of My mercy must pass through the door of My justice... (1146) Today I heard a voice in my soul: Oh, if sinners knew My mercy, they would not perish in such great numbers. Tell sinful souls not to be afraid to approach Me; speak to them of My great mercy.

The Lord said to me, The loss of each soul plunges Me into mortal sadness. You always console Me when you pray for sinners. The prayer most pleasing to Me is prayer for the conversion of sinners. Know, My daughter, that this prayer is always heard and answered. (1396-1397)

... Oh, how miserable are those who do not take advantage of the miracle of God's mercy! You will call out in vain, but it will be too late. (1448)

My daughter, tell souls that I am giving them My mercy as a defense. I Myself am fighting for them and am bearing the just anger of My Father. (1516)

The Lord said to me, My daughter, do not tire of proclaiming My mercy. In this way you will refresh this Heart of Mine, which burns with a flame of pity for sinners. Tell My priests that hardened sinners will repent on hearing their words when they speak about My unfathomable mercy, about the compassion I have for them in My Heart. To priests who proclaim and extol My mercy, I will give wondrous power; I will anoint their words and touch the hearts of those to whom they will speak. (1521)

Write: I am Thrice Holy, and I detest the smallest sin. I cannot love a soul which is stained with sin; but when it repents, there is no limit to My generosity toward it. My mercy embraces and justifies it. With My mercy, I pursue sinners along all their paths, and My Heart rejoices when they return to Me. I forget the bitterness with which they fed My Heart and rejoice at their return. Tell sinners that no one shall escape My Hand; if they run away from My Merciful Heart, they will fall into My Just Hands. (1728)
