Michie's typo in the title of her thread "Five gun facts about the internet's patron saint" made me wonder if there is a Catholic saint who carried a gun.

So I googled it and found St. Gabriel Possenti.
ST. GABRIEL POSSENTI
Feast: February 27

On a summer day a little over a hundred years ago, a slim figure in a black cassock stood facing a gang of mercenaries in a small town in Piedmont, Italy. He had just disarmed one of the soldiers who was attacking a young girl, had faced the rest of the band fearlessly, then drove them all out of the village at the point of a gun. The young man was Francesco Possenti, whose father was lawyer for the Papal States and who had recently joined the Passionist Order, taking the name of Brother Gabriel.

Francesco Possenti had been the fanciest dresser in town as well as the best dancer. He was a superb horseman and an excellent marksman. Engaged to two girls at the same time and a great partygoer, he had shocked his family by announcing after his graduation that he was going to become a Passionist monk. No one believed him and expected him back within a few weeks. He stayed, and when Garibaldi's mercenaries swept down through Italy ravaging villages, Brother Gabriel showed the kind of man he was by confronting them, astonishing them with his marksmanship, and saving the small village where his monastery was located.

That's pretty darn cool. I find some tension (?) among Catholics, some who seem to be extremely pacifistic, and others who have a less extreme view of militancy and the use of force. Isn't this the Church that did the Crusades? And now guns are anathema? As is capitol punishment, wariness over mass immigration of Muslims, violence of any kind, and spanking? Seriously?

Thanks for finding this, it helps!

Luke 22:35
"And the man without a sword must sell his coat and buy one."

Hello LivingWordUnity,
Christ's Apostles were packing heat at the Last Supper. Yes, the heat they were packing was swords, rather than guns, but this is only because guns had not been invented yet.

After celebrating the first Eucharist, Jesus then discusses the importance for the Apostles to bear arms to protect themselves, "And the man without a sword must sell his coat and buy one.".

I know what Pope Francis says about guns, but I am sure Pope Francis is packing heat, in the form of armed Swiss Guard and armed Italian police, almost everywhere he goes; And this is good! Jesus Commanded His Apostles to sell their coats if necessary, to arm themselves, to protect themselves.

Luke 22:34 Instructions for the Time of Crisis.
He said to them, “When I sent you forth without a money bag or a sack or sandals, were you in need of anything?” “No, nothing,” they replied. He said to them, “But now one who has a money bag should take it, and likewise a sack, and one who does not have a sword should sell his cloak and buy one. For I tell you that this scripture must be fulfilled in me, namely, ‘He was counted among the wicked’; and indeed what is written about me is coming to fulfillment.” Then they said, “Lord, look, there are two swords here.” But he replied, “It is enough!”
