• The General Mental Health Forum is now a Read Only Forum. As we had two large areas making it difficult for many to find, we decided to combine the Mental Health & the Recovery sections of the forum into Mental Health & Recovery as a whole. Physical Health still remains as it's own area within the entire Recovery area.

If you are having struggles, need support in a particular area that you aren't finding a specific recovery area forum, you may find the General Struggles forum a great place to post. Any any that is related to emotions, self-esteem, insomnia, anger, relationship dynamics due to mental health and recovery and other issues that don't fit better in another forum would be examples of topics that might go there.

If you have spiritual issues related to a mental health and recovery issue, please use the Recovery Related Spiritual Advice forum. This forum is designed to be like Christian Advice, only for recovery type of issues. Recovery being like a family in many ways, allows us to support one another together. May you be blessed today and each day.

Hello, I have a question regarding my mental illness. I'm on meds for it but recently was switched to something else. Without it, I am in mental torment and pain and fear if I have committed the unpardonable sin. Judas who betrayed Jesus suffered mental torment when he betrayed Jesus and committed suicide right? It's so scary. I don't know if my mental torment is spiritual or just mentally sick. I've been reading and memorizing bible verses and found this list:
Psalm 39:9- I am mute; I do not open my mouth, for it is You who have done it.
Jeremiah 15:17-19= I sat alone, because Your hand was upon me, for you have filled me with indignation. Why is my pain unceasing, my wound incurable, refusing to be healed? Will you be to me like a deceitful brook, like waters that fail?
Psalm 88:6-7= You have put me in the depth of the pit, in the region dark and deep. Your wrath lies heavy upon me, and you overwhelm me with all your waves. Read verses 13-18.
Jeremiah 15:18= Why is my pain unceasing, my wound incurable, refusing to be healed? Will you be to me like a deceitful brook, like waters that fail?
Psalm 130:1-2- Out of the depths I cry to you, O LORD! O Lord, hear my voice! Let your ears be attentive to the voice of my pleas for mercy!
Psalm 40:1-4= I waited patiently for the LORD; He inclined to me and heard my cry. He pulled me out of a horrible pit, out of the miry clay, and set my feet upon a rock, and established my steps. He put a new song in my mouth, a song of praise to our God. Many will see and fear, and put their trust in the LORD.
Psalm 119:67=Before I was afflicted, I went astray, but now I keep your Word.
Psalm 119:17= It is good for me that I was afflicted, that I may learn your statutes.
I found encouraging verses such as:
2 Corinthians 4:17- For this light momentary affliction is preparing for us an eternal weight of glory beyond all comparison, esv
Romans 8:18- For I consider [from the standpoint of faith] that the sufferings of the present life are not worthy to be compared with the glory that is about to be revealed to us and in us!
1 Peter 1:3-9 on suffering and there's more but I'll stop there.

I know Scripture memorization helps. The book that inspired me to do so is called, 100 Verses Everyone Should Know by Heart, by Robert J Morgan. Just 50-55 pages tells why we should and his stories and illustrations greatly encourages and inspires me to do so before he shares the 100 verses.

But I had a medication swapped which made my illness worse before my doctor corrected that. So I'm feeling stuck if my suffering is mental or spiritual and it's awful not knowing which and if I'm saved or not.

You asked and now you'll get conflicting answers from people. Then you'll still be worrying about it. Some people think that medicine is wrong and that if you had enough faith, you'd be healed. I think that sort of thinking is dangerous. It's as if a person who needs glasses should throw the glasses away. Or you tell a blind person he's blind because he lacks faith. Stay on your meds. Find a friend who will encourage you rather than make you doubt. Keep memorizing those Bible verses; they really are helpful! I know that from experience.

May God bless you as you learn to stay close to Him.

(((safe hugs))) What torment! The brain is chemically balanced with your medications and that's a good thing! Don't overthink this, please.

At it's very root, no one would have mental unwellness had the "original" sin not been committed, so in that sense all unwellness is spiritually from the evil one.

Our bodies are made to operate perfectly with all the nutrition etc that God gave us in the plants etc. However, modern science (which created those drugs you take) ruined our foods and modified our plants... plants which provided naturally the same things synthetic drugs are providing.

The brain has no opinion of it's own. That means it makes the chemicals for our bodies based upon what the body needs, governed by OUR THOUGHTS. Modern neurobiologists have discovered that we can change our brain's chemicals with our minds. (Epigenetics). God created us marvelously.

While you continue to take the medications, work on healthy thinking...such as "I am becoming healthier and healthier, God is balancing my body's chemicals..." As the MDs continue to check your meds etc, I pray they will find, over time, that you need less and less of the synthetics!

Christ returns soon, and none of us will have any maladies then! :prayer:

What is clear is that what is happening to you is real and you are suffering. I believe it is all spiritual, even if there is a physically visible issue in the brain or if it can even be linked to hormones (which there is no known test for). Those things wouldn't change anything as far as how I see it. But you have to be the one who decides that as far as your faith goes.
When I first became a Christian and decided to follow Jesus, I read about how Jesus cast how 7 evil spirits from Mary. It didn't strike me that she was a foaming from the mouth kind of person so it got me to thinking, could I have evil spirits in me? At that moment I prayed that if that was the case that they could be cast out of me as well. I had a history of anxiety and depression. As I put Christ on and was baptized, my identity changed to be in Christ. I knew who I was and where I was going and was living my life with purpose. I have not had an anxiety attack since becoming a Christian. To explain further, I think it would be because my conscience was clear and I was no longer afraid to die. I am much more joyful even with trials and hardships. I was given peace.
Being in a place where you aren't sure you are saved would prevent you from having that peace. Why do you think you aren't saved? What is it that you feel you've done that is the unpardonable sin? The only one I know of from scripture is the blasphemy of the holy spirit.
Also, do you read the bible or do you read snippets of scripture? If you haven't read all of the new testament yet, you would really benefit from that. Reading snippets is great as reminders but you should have a strong holistic view of scripture to truly benefit from all of its goodness.
