'Only White People,' Said the Little Girl

Five years ago--only five years ago--I was taking an orientation course to sub in our local school district. So there were about 20 people in the course. During one session led by one of the high school principals, the principal asked the question: "If a fight starts in the hall, who do you protect first?"
A white woman at the end of the row immediately piped up: "The whites!"
I had to take a moment to blink, turn my head, and look at her.
The principal was also taken a bit aback. He then said, "I'm not happy with that answer."
The answer was: "Protect yourself. Make sure you're not inadvertently part of the melee. Then get a regular faculty member."

I can't believe that's in the Opinion section of the NYT. A child saying something mean surely should be a front page story.

I don't know, could've got it anywhere these days. Likely from an entertainment source, or from following SummerMadness' threads.

I think most children are delightful and non-racist, but such scenarios are going to happen given the racial history of the United States.
It is quite difficult when trying to figure out how do you address this? Do you ignore it? What do you do when it happens again? Do you confront the children? Do you confront the parents but leave the children out of it? Do you confront both together? What should that confrontation look like? How should that discussion look? I think the author's conclusion at the end was a great response.

I didn't have time to read the whole article before the 'you have used up your 10 articles for the month'. I don't have a subscription to the Times.

A teacher might at least not make such presumptions. Some of us black kids are Trek-loving geeks that get picked on.
But it does become clear to kids at quite a young age when the authorities in their worlds are making those presumptions.
