I work part time at a supermarket. I will be coming up on three years in a few days. For the first two years I worked on the front end of the store, first as a cashier and then a cart boy. While being a cart boy is bad, especially where I live with the elements, cashier is worse. I was interested in transferring to another department once I turned eighteen, as there are very few positions available at the store to minors. I struggled to transfer for a while because while on carts, I had gotten in trouble a few times shortly before I found Christ. There was once or twice also where I got in trouble for mundane things (blame is often placed on us because mid level management is trying to cover themselves). This record hindered me, but I worked hard enough and eventually they deemed me good enough to transfer inside. Just recently some shifts appeared on my schedule for outside. I was indifferent as I needed the hours, although it was incredibly hot this weekend. For reference, if you are on carts and trained to cash, they will sometimes call you inside to cash when the front end gets backed up. You drop whatever you are doing and go in, and someone else untrained picks up your carts. This is not a problem when it is this hot out, but this is where my mess up begins. Four times I was called in to cash, I drop everything and go in, and it turns out they did not need me. The reason for this is most likely because the people running the front end (coordinators) were all new, before having worked along with me but decided to take the most stressful job in the store. They were still learning the ropes. I saw them as my equals, and since I have been there longer than some of them I thought I could give them some advice. My mistake was doing this over the walkie-talkie, where everyone including customers could hear it. I was not disrespectful or out of line, it was sincere as I have seen how the front end works, where many of them came from other departments or places.. However any criticism like that is to be avoided in front in customers, and there could have been customers in proximity to someone with a walkie-talkie. I was called into the front office by two STL's (Service Team Leader, above Coordinator) who asked me what happened and talked to me for a bit. They were understanding but sent me home two and a half hours early. I work tomorrow and while the incident itself is nothing and would not worry me (they were forced to follow protocol even though they did not want to, it was considered "out of line"), I am worried that my past record will come up if the Front End manager wants to meet with me. All over something I said mindlessly to people I was talking to as friends, not my superiors. Any advice on what to say if he wants to meet with me? I obviously messed up and take full blame for it, but I am worried about my job security. It is part time while I am in college, but it is a great company to work for. Anything else I should say besides owning up to it?

Hi Hammer,

I'm sorry this happened, working in the service industry can be stressful, I know.

I think it is clear that you realize what went wrong and why it was dealt with as it was, and it is also clear that you regret what happened, even though you had no ill intentions. We all make mistakes, and I hope your manager is understanding in that regard.

The only advice I would offer is to apologize sincerely.

You can't change what has happened, but taking responsibility for your mistakes is a very mature thing to do, and hopefully your manager will see that and understand you realize where you went wrong in how you handled things.

I hope it all works out for you. :)

Don't forget to give all your worries to God, for He cares about you. (1 Peter 5:7)

I'd just like to ask what you have done in response? Not sure if you have been in to work since this. Apologizing to the staff you spoke to over the walkie talkie for approaching them that way is good. As amariselle said it does need to be sincere. It certainly does sound like they understood you were trying to be helpful and aim for what is best overall for the entire team. If that is the case I don't think it will go any further.

I can understand your concern. Having had a few prior incidents, you start to wonder when a straw will break the camel's back. As the others have said, you should apologize. If it comes up again, you should indicate *why* you know what you did was wrong, and assure them there won't be any more problems. And btw, if someone is a supervisor -- even if they have less seniority than you -- I don't think you should consider them as "friends". They are supervisors and you're not. They should be treated as your superiors even if they're brand new.

I wish you luck.

Remember to be thankful and express it.
I havent worked at a supermarket but Of course I use them every week and I notice when the workers there are courteous.

The bible tells us whatever we do, we work for God and not to please men...so have Him on your mind even when you working as Hes the real boss. You are an ambassador for Christ. If you do something out of line just say you were wrong and wont do it again.
Many workplaces will give warnings and wont fire people over small offences because its in their best interest to keep workers as it costs more to hire new ones. Your relationship with your manager and co workers ought to be professional though sadly work is not always a place to make friends you are paid to work. Any socializing you do needs to be done on your break or outside of work hours, focus on your tasks.

I used to be a manager for Albertsons.

I think the most important thing is that you work hard on a daily basis then minor mistakes will be overlooked.

If you aren't a good worker and your bosses want to get rid of you then they can use any excuse.

not to them, but to yourself, say out loud:

'the Lord is my refuge and my fortress: my God; in Him will i trust'; and no matter what happens, He will deliver you :)

Psa 91:1-16 KJV
(1) He that dwelleth in the secret place of the most High shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty.
(2) I will say of the LORD, He is my refuge and my fortress: my God; in him will I trust.
(3) Surely he shall deliver thee from the snare of the fowler, and from the noisome pestilence.
(4) He shall cover thee with his feathers, and under his wings shalt thou trust: his truth shall be thy shield and buckler.
(5) Thou shalt not be afraid for the terror by night; nor for the arrow that flieth by day;
(6) Nor for the pestilence that walketh in darkness; nor for the destruction that wasteth at noonday.
(7) A thousand shall fall at thy side, and ten thousand at thy right hand; but it shall not come nigh thee.
(8) Only with thine eyes shalt thou behold and see the reward of the wicked.
(9) Because thou hast made the LORD, which is my refuge, even the most High, thy habitation;
(10) There shall no evil befall thee, neither shall any plague come nigh thy dwelling.
(11) For he shall give his angels charge over thee, to keep thee in all thy ways.
(12) They shall bear thee up in their hands, lest thou dash thy foot against a stone.
(13) Thou shalt tread upon the lion and adder: the young lion and the dragon shalt thou trample under feet.
(14) Because he hath set his love upon me, therefore will I deliver him: I will set him on high, because he hath known my name.
(15) He shall call upon me, and I will answer him: I will be with him in trouble; I will deliver him, and honour him.
(16) With long life will I satisfy him, and shew him my salvation.

Don't worry about it. It's an honest mistake. If you want a Bible reference, in the Bible we read proverbs and this teaches us wisdom. Wisdom is how when we mature as Christians (takes time) we end up avoiding a lot of these pitfalls.

For example, advice is usually given face to face in a secluded place when you understand business. But it's a wisdom thing you got to learn.

And the reason you don't have to worry is that God is your provider as a Christian. God is your source, so should they fire you over a mistake, you accept it, and God will give you a better job going forward.

If you rely on Christ, set backs may seem to happen, but they are not really setbacks, but temporary times before God blesses you into something better. That said, I do not believe you will be fired because you are a Christian. God will send his angels to speak to people and make a way for you.
