Did you know that Avi Kaplan, one of the main singers of this band, is not only from my town, but WENT TO MY ELEMENTARY SCHOOL where I teach?! He was there in sixth grade around 2000-2001.

Sunday will be the First Day of Advent so I guess I'm getting in the Christmas spirit a little early and this group gives me the chills.

Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo spiritual song "Tewahedo haymanote" - "Tewahedo (Orthodoxy), my religion" - sung by Ethiopian Orthodox singer Tigist Sileshi.

The chorus goes: "Tewahedo, my religion / you are ancient faith of my Mothers and Fathers / I will never break my cross necklace / Tewahedo will live forever"

Not posturing in modern Ethiopia, beset on all sides by members of the hostile religion and facing its own problems with terrorism. (In another video for this song, it is prefaced not by the speech by a man as in this version, but by footage of young people in a village church school who were attacked by members of local Islamist groups with machetes. Lord have mercy.)

The piece of music my mother loved was the Bach/Gounod version of Ave Maria .

It was sung at my parent's wedding .

When I asked my mother why she loved it she said , " It lifts me ."

It was the last piece at her funeral as we left the crematorium . I chose this particular recording because she became a fan of Andrea Bocelli in her later years .

This hymn was sung at my First Communion .

Here it is being sung in Westminster Cathedral during a Mass presided over by Pope Benedict .

O Bread of Heaven, beneath this veil
Thou dost my very God conceal:
My Jesus, dearest treasure, hail!
I love Thee and, adoring, kneel;
Each loving soul by Thee is fed
With Thine own Self in form of Bread.

O food of life, Thou Who dost give
The pledge of immortality;
I live, no 'tis not I that live;
God gives me life, God lives in me:
He feeds my soul, He guides my ways,
And every grief with joy repays.

O Bond of love that dost unite
The servant to his living Lord;
Could I dare live and not requite
Such love - then death were meet reward:
I cannot live unless to prove
Some love for such unmeasured love.

Beloved Lord, in Heaven above
There, Jesus, Thou awaitest me,
To gaze on Thee with endless love;
Yes, thus I hope, thus shall it be:
For how can He deny me Heaven,
Who here on earth Himself hath given?

O Magnum Mysterium sung in Westminster Cathedral during a Christmas Midnight Mass .

O magnum mysterium et admirabile sacramentum, ut animalia viderent Dominum natum, jacentem in præsepio. Beata virgo, cujus viscera meruerunt portare Dominum Christum, Alleluia!

Translation: O great mystery and wondrous sacrament, that animals should see the newborn Lord lying in their manger. Blessed is the Virgin whose womb was worthy to bear the Lord Jesus Christ. Alleluia!
