Christians Weren't Fooled: Worldwide Box Office Can't Save 'Exodus' - Breitbart
Eight months later, enter director Ridley Scott’s $185 million “Exodus,” and a disastrous opening weekend that failed to hit even $25 million. Those who had been burnt by “Noah” knew another Hollywood sucker punch when they saw one, especially after the director bragged openly about his atheism and star Christian Bale described Moses the Lawgiver (his character) as “schizophrenic” and “barbaric.”

Proving the American Faithful are not as dumb as Hollywood had hoped for and counted on, it is now safe to say that domestically “Exodus” probably won’t reach $70 million. In worse news for Hollywood, according to The Hollywood Reporter the worldwide Faithful have also refused to be fooled again.
Sigh ... all they had to do was follow the original script.

One could tell by the previews they had made Moses out to be a psychopath. I won't bother to see it, not even when it arrives on free TV.
I watched the movie, and I wouldn't consider that to be the case at all.
My beef was that the movie left out half to two thirds of the most interesting parts of the story.

I want to take issue with one thing from the Op. It implies that a director who openly 'brags' about being atheist is always a bad thing for movies based on scripture.

If I were directing such I might do the same, but I'd also say I had a good story to start with and I'm not changing things.

Which means I probably would not do Noah, as the story really isn't well suited to film. Sorry but hundreds of days stuck on a crowded stinking ark isn't going to make a hit film. And no tag lines.

Not like Exodus and 'Let my people go'.

Haven't seen it and don't plan to. "Noah" was painful enough.
I didn't watch either one ... though I initially wanted to until I heard comments from people who went. :(

It seems obvious from these two high-cost movies though that the current Hollywood decision makers have no interest in making movies which are biblically accurate. The good news is that should leave the field wide open to the small independents who have been successful recently and who are interested in making movies which offer uplifting and beneficial biblical insights.
I didn't really care for the nose-thumbing attitude of the OP's article, but... *shrug* point taken, I guess.

Instead, they chose to arrogantly mock God and His followers.

Hollywood might someday learn that hate is a poison you drink yourself.

Meanwhile, those of us they hate are just pointing, laughing, and spending our money elsewhere.
While there is certainly attitude in the article, the article is accurate ... and contains far less attitude than has been displayed by the movie makers themselves.

Noah was pretty bad. ;)

I guess everyone is entitled to their own opinions. I haven't seen the movie yet but with all this fuss over it, it makes me want to go see it.

It's not accurate because I'm not "pointing" and "laughing". Portraying Christians as mocking, sneering punks (like "haha! take that, stupid atheists!") does nothing but make the pot look as black as the kettle.

Admittedly, I don't know much about the site that this article was taken from, but what's with the repeated reference to "rubes"? I know what the traditional definition of that word is, but how is it being meant here?

I also find it odd that he keeps referring to Christians as "the Faithful". Why the capitalization? I've been a Christian for over 30 years and have never seen that. Ah well. What do I know?

Fair enough. It's not a pure Christian attitude. :sorry:

The assumption being made by the writers for Breitbart is that Hollywood moguls look down on Christians as ignorant ... as indicated by the repeated efforts to turn out movies which are largely contrary to biblical teachings.

I just translated the hyperbole as meaning people of faith and didn't give it additional thought.

Why do so many Christians have such a persecution complex? Really, they were trying to "fool" you? "Hollywood probably figured they had cracked the code: sell the movie to the rubes as biblical, sucker punch them after the ticket purchase, laugh all the way to the bank. This is what’s known to the bigoted as a win-win." I read this and see deranged paranoia.

I agree, Maynard. If anything, I felt like Hollywood was trying to fool unbelievers by selling them something "Christian" which wasn't really Christian at all. Like "hey, don't be scared, come check out this watered-down yet totally culturally relevant movie with... wait for it... Christian Bale...! Scriptural accuracy? Come on, man, this is art!!"

It's insultingly pathetic.

Also, does anyone know why it's called "Gods (plural) and Kings"? Where does the plural "Gods" factor into the story?

I haven't read the article, but if that is the case that greatly surprises me.

Jewish people basically run most of Hollywood (conservative Ben Stein acknowledges this and rightfully is proud of it as a Jewish person himself). And that in part has a lot to do with the history of Hollywood in it's early days. Protestants often had a moral objection to theater and acting. Whereas Jewish people and Catholics rarely did. And the Jews got heavily involved in Hollywood in its early days.

Hollywood is also very liberal. But you have a lot of secular Jews. So, consequently both influences are present in Hollywood films.

But what I'm saying is that you are unlikely to a get much of any conservative or Orthodox (conservative) Jewish movies out of Hollywood, on the other hand you are unlikely to get films produced that would bash Jewish people or put down their heroes.

So, Moses is to Jewish people what Jesus is to Christians. I'd expect to see a lot of anti-Christian movies coming out of Hollywood and few anti-Jewish movies coming out of Hollywood. I also would expect to see very few anti-liberal movies coming out of Hollywood.

The best expectation or guess in my opinion is to ask what stories will best align with the views and values of liberal, secular, Jews that are disproportionately in the executive seats of Hollywood.

You have to ask yourself these questions about books too. If the author is communist then expect a book that reflects his communist beliefs. If the author is Muslim then Islam. If the author is a conservative Catholic then the book will reflect his or her conservative Catholic religious beliefs. If the author is Afrocentric and so on. Feminist are not going to promote anti-feminist themes. Things like that.

Can't say I'm sorry to hear about their failure.

Between The Bible, on the History Channel, Noah, and now this train wreck, I have no desire whatsoever to see what unregenerate Hollywood does to mangle the Word of God.

Deranged paranoia is how you keep the faithful in line -- "trust no one... except us..."

Breitbart knows the formula... mock Hollywood for failing at what they themselves have succeeded at.

Well played, Breitbart.

Did they end it right after the crossing of the red sea again? It gets just as interesting when they wander around. I guess people complaining for 40 years isn't as interesting. :D

If I remember correctly, the movie culminated with the crossing of the Red Sea, but did sort of touch on a bit after. I don't think they portrayed Moses as a "psycho". It was an ok movie, and I got a bit of entertainment from it.
