I really want to obey the Ten Commandments, especially the Sabbath. But I keep breaking them. I put rules on myself like "give God 10% of your time." That is part of the second commandment I added to "worship God only" on the Ten Commandments. I break that part everytime; the 10% part not the part that says worship God only. I also break the 4th commandment which says "observe the Sabbath Day and keep it holy." I break his other commandments as well, but I am going to work hard in observing them and obeying them, with the help of Christ. Am I wrong in wanting to put strict rules on myself?

The point of the Ten Commandments and the Law was to point out the need for Savior. Jesus came and fulfilled the law.

We're no longer required to "try" and follow them perfectly, but that doesn't mean they're irrelevent now either.

They still contain truth about God and truth about how we should live life.

Sabbath was on Saturday in Bible times. How many people break the "Sabbath" by going to church on Sunday? Pretty much everyone.

Everyone breaks the commandments at some point. we should still try and live a godly life and live according to the principles behind the ten commandments, but to try and follow the ten commandments perfectly is impossible, because only Jesus could do that.

We are now under the New Testament covenant, which means that the Holy Spirit who lives in us, enables us and gives us the power, to obey God's commandments. It is the grace of God which helps us to live the christian live. In the Old Testament they did not have the Holy Spirit living in them, appart from prophets and kings, thereforee, they did not have the power or the anointing in them, to help them live by the cocmmandments of God.

Jesse2014, you're right to want to keep the commandments. John 14:15 says If we love Him, we'll keep His commandments. The 10 Commandments are also in the NT - they're just not all listed together. Plus the two greatest commandments are in the OT. But to "love others as yourself" isn't listed with the 10. Yeshua was ask what's the greatest commandments in the law? "in the law".

Law and grace work together. Yahweh's laws give us directions for our lives while His grace enables to do what He desires of us. We also realize that we've really got to have Yahweh's help to keep His Word and that's all about His grace.

Listen to your brothers and sisters posting above mine.

Grace (meaning GODS unfailing love towards you regardless of what you've done) is
the POWER to get you to live the 'kingdom life'.

Maybe this may help: Our minds are like mirrors that either reflect our surroundings (walking by sight) or reflect what we believe GOD is /or has said to us (walking by Faith)

But the first step, is you need to learn to trust GOD.

Some say "Of course, I trust GOD - what do you think?"

No, trust HIM with a perfect love, that loves you NO MATTER WHAT!
its unsearchable and unfailing!

I think you accidentally double posted, which is OK. :)

Thank you for the advice. And that's what I am going to work on is trusting God.

If you say you want to do something but you do something else then maybe you want to do something else more than you say you want to do something.

I will admit that my worldly desires so much stronger then my spiritual desires. That's why I break his commandments. But I see that as a problem. Just like someone who wants to lose wait desires to eat more food then to excersize. Jesus said the spirit is willing but the flesh is week. I want my spiritual life to become stronger then my fleshly life. I don't if that make sense. Because ultimately if I live in the flesh continuasly, I will perish. Just calling him Lord won't get me into heaven.

The reason why I set strict goals, I will admit, is fear.

Well, you want to do well, to keep the Commandments, and that is great. However, if you put a lot of additional rules and regulations on yourself, it might - or might not - be religion. I can't know for sure as I do not know what is in your heart and what is being led by the Holy Spirit.

One thing I would say - if you don't keep the 10% "tithe" of your time, that is not breaking any Commandment, just a man made rule. So if you fail in that at times you should not get under condemnation.

It took me some time, personally, to really keep the Sabbath. I can' t say I'm perfect yet, though. Have you actually studied what the Bible says about keeping the Sabbath? I don't know.

But it says to not do any work on that day, not to even have any servants do work on that day. There goes eating out, as the waiters and waitresses are servers or servants, for ex. There are to be no financial transactions. When the Israelis bought fish at the gate on the Sabbath, they got in big trouble.

We are told not to cook on that day so I prepare my food in advance, picnic style. It really does help you get more into a state of rest. I initially would heat up tea with the microwave. Can't prove it but I felt very led to stop doing that. If you have a crockpot you can get water heated up before sundown (that's called astronomical twilight and you can check the times out online or look until you can see two stars in the sky as the ancient Israelies did) and use that simmering water for tea or coffee the next day.

Isaiah tells us not to go our own way on the Sabbath, but to keep it holy unto YHWH. There goes T.V. and most entertainment. But, as I mentioned in another post, there is a ton of inspirational stuff on Youtube.

Isaiah talks about the blessings that come from keeping the Sabbath and leading a righteous life in general. I think it's Chapter 58. If not, 53.

But...you know Messiah said that all the Law and the Prophets hang on love. (Some people think he was replacing the Law of Moses with some new laws about love, but you don't seem to fall into that error. He was answering a Q about which laws were most important, and He quoted the "Old" Testament which already tells us to love others as ourselves, even love our enemies, and to love YHWH with all our hearts and souls and minds.) So, our biggest focus is to be on praying to love more and more! "Without love"
all the rest "profits nothing." You can pray for me to pray to love more and more too!

I will be praying that for you. Life is confusing and so often so hard, but you keep hanging in there Jesse. Good for you.

Your listing is Christian, not Jewish. Do what Jesus said which is put God First and Love your neighbor as yourself. GOD FIRST, not sometimes but At ALL times. Just do that and you won't have to worry about the rest of the 10 any more..

It would not matter, though, if Jesse was Jewish or not. Contrary to what is sometimes taught, there are not two laws, one for Jews and one for non Jews.

In the "Old" Testament we are told there is one law, just one, for the native born and for the foreigner in Israel. In the "New" Testament (more accurately described as the Renewed Covenant) we are told that "There is neither Greek nor Jew." We are told that we nonJews are to be "grafted in". Grafted into what? Israel. We are told to come into an inheritance through whom? Abraham.

Nowhere does the Bible ever make a distinction between what Jews and nonJews are to do.

We do have to worry about "the rest of the 10". We need to be concerned that we don't bow down to other gods, don't commit adultery and so on just as much as those before Messiah. We are told in the "Old" Testament that a time will come when the Law will no longer just be on stone but be written on our hearts. As others have said above, this is through the empowering of the Holy Spirit. But notice we are, therefore, being told that the Law will still be in effect for us.

Btw the commandments to love the Almighty with all our hearts and souls and minds, to love our neighbors as ourselves, to love our enemies and so on were not some new thing that Messiah came up with. He was asked not which laws had been done away with from the Scriptures, but which were the most important when He reiterated, not spoke for a first time, the laws of love which were already spoken by the Father to the ancient Israelis.

Yes, if we love enough we won't want to break the Commandments. But our struggle to not break them, which we all have, because we generally don't love enough, can drive us to Him and His love so that we get the strength to live holy lives, so that the Holy Spirit will write those laws on our hearts.

I guess I just don't understand grace and works

This is my understanding of grace and works at this point in my life, for whatever help it may be. First, grace is not some new "New" Testament thing, as is sometimes taught, but is mentioned throughout the "Old" Testament.

Grace is the Almighty giving us undeserved gifts. Gifts to obey, but any kind of gifts. Works are good deeds we do. Grace gets us to Heaven. Good deeds can never do that. We can never pay enough for our sins through good works. Only the Blood of Messiah can pay the price. But! Good works do determine, if done in love, what our reward will be like in Heaven. Messiah mentioned that some people will get to Heaven but will have no reward.

Praying for you, for all of us, to have great reward in Heaven.

Dear Jesse2014. The two Commandments: Love God with all your hearts, with all your souls, and with all your minds, also: Love thy neighbour as thyself: those two Commandments say all what the Ten Commandments, which God gave Moses, say: to Love God with all our hearts, with all our souls, and with all our minds, ALSO: love our neighbour as we love ourselves.
( neighbour: all we know and all we meet, friends and not friends) To obey God is to obey those 10 Commandments. All we say or do, all we advice or stand for, MUST BE TO FOLLOW THOSE TWO COMMANDMENTS.
To Love God is straightforward, we follow His Commandments and show our love for God. to love our neighbour as we love ourselves is also straightforward: DO TO OTHERS AS YOU WOULD LOVE OTHERS DO TO YOU.
We were all made in God`s image, we all know how to love and show meaningful compassion, plus the helping hand when needed.
In Matthew 7: 7-10: we are told to " ask and receive," then we thank God and share all Love and Joy with our neighbour. We keep asking and receiving,
then we thank God and share all Love and Joy with each other. God knows our hearts, and God will know if we are sincere or pretending.
The Bible tells us: " Repent and be Born Again," we start changing our selfish
and unloving attitudes, to becoming as God wants us to be: Loving God and living in love and harmony with our neighbour. That may not come easy to us at first, but God wants it from us, and Love is very catching, and Love will change us gradually. Jesus our Saviour will help and guide us, remember:
ask and ye shall receive, that is a promise. We might stumble and forget at times, but then we ask God for forgiveness, and carry on Loving and Caring.
I say this with love, Jesse. Greetings from Emmy, your sister in Christ.

Who told you there were only 10 Commandments? There were a whole lot more given at Mt. Sinai.

There 613 basic laws to follow..... and then several hundred more were added to those. You can't slack off with just deciding to only follow 10.

BTW.......................... There are none of us humans who can even follow that tiny number. Jesus didn't tell us to. He said to rest in Him.
