• The General Mental Health Forum is now a Read Only Forum. As we had two large areas making it difficult for many to find, we decided to combine the Mental Health & the Recovery sections of the forum into Mental Health & Recovery as a whole. Physical Health still remains as it's own area within the entire Recovery area.

If you are having struggles, need support in a particular area that you aren't finding a specific recovery area forum, you may find the General Struggles forum a great place to post. Any any that is related to emotions, self-esteem, insomnia, anger, relationship dynamics due to mental health and recovery and other issues that don't fit better in another forum would be examples of topics that might go there.

If you have spiritual issues related to a mental health and recovery issue, please use the Recovery Related Spiritual Advice forum. This forum is designed to be like Christian Advice, only for recovery type of issues. Recovery being like a family in many ways, allows us to support one another together. May you be blessed today and each day.

Hmm, that's a complicated question. Depends on the Christians. Someone in another thread wrote that a church member told him that he is demon possessed and he has to be healed through Christian ways not medication. So he said back whenever that other person stops taking medicine for his diabetes-demon he will stop taking meds for his OCD-demon. I thought it was hilarious and true. In this age, OCD should be seen as a medical problem not only as a spiritual. I have had OCD since fifth grade and only recently it became a spiritual one. It used be about other things. It was only after I was finally able to overcome them and see they are not real that my OCD switched to a religious one.

Some christians are really stubborn and since they have never experienced anything like this, they cannot really understand it. So they call it demons, etc. How conservative are your Christian friends? Some people understand, others don't.

I pick and choose the special people in my life when I tell them about some of my OCD issues. I mostly have mine under control, but during high stress times I notice it re-emerging. I just have to keep in mind that I was able to get a grip prior and that I can do it again.

No one has treated me poorly, but then again, I don't open up to everyone.

I don't tell vey many people about my OCD, though, I have been telling people slightly more frequently as time has gone on. This is because I've gotten more comfortable with my OCD and am relatively firm in my understanding of what it is.

When I do tell people though, I usually am just stating a fact in casual conversation. I'm not really opening up and explaining how it affects me and how I feel about it. The few Christian people that I've talked to about it haven't been mean about it. However, I don't think everyone has totally understood it.

I remember telling my dad about it and being frustrated with how lightly he seemed to take it. He had an attitude of, "oh, you think you have OCD? That's a bummer." He wasn't being mean, I just don't think he understood fully that OCD was as horrid as it is.

I also have a friend with OCD who says her husband doesn't really seem to understand how much her OCD bothers her. She's talked to him about it before, but he still seems to view it as something that isn't a big deal. Not that he's being a jerk, it's just that he doesn't understand.

I think some people just have a really hard time understanding the anxiety that we can feel from something as trivial as a disorganized desk. Some people manifest their misunderstanding as ambivalence towards your rituals. Others manifest it as beliefs involving demon possession.
