Bringing together Jonah and Jesus through St. John, we see that idolatry and loving the things of this world produces the same effect - turning away from God.

Jonah 2:8
“Those who cling to worthless idols
turn away from God’s love for them.

1 John 2:15
Do not love the world or anything in the world. If anyone loves the world, love for the Father[a] is not in them.

So do you love any sport? Any hobby? Any car? Any gadget? Any job or career? Any clothing? Any place? Any food?

Read the verse in context. John then defines "love for the world"

"For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh, and the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life, is not of the Father, but is of the world."

Clearly, John is not talking about loving a particular sport or hobby, but loving the SINFUL ATTITUDE of the world.

Wrong. Whoever put's the world above God is worshiping an idol.

I'm not talking about idolatry, I'm responding the verse OP seems to think casual activities, like playing a sport, a sin. (Unless I'm misunderstanding OP)

Ephesians 5:25...Husbands, love your wives, as Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her...

The wife would be something in the world...so...perhaps the broad generalization here, and legalism, is little more than that.

I'm responding to the OP thread title. So my post stands either way. Loving anything above God is called idolatry.

Agreed..."Loving anything above God is ...idolatry". However, the OP states that loving anything in the world is idolatry, and that just isn't true. There are varying degrees of love. I can say that I love a well prepared steak, I certainly don't love it more than or anywhere near the way I love God, but that doesn't mean I don't love it, nor does it make it idolatry.

Actually...

Let's compare scripture with scripture.

Matthew 10:37
He that loveth father or mother more than me is not worthy of me: and he that loveth son or daughter more than me is not worthy of me.

1 John 2:15
Love not the world, neither the things that are in the world. If any man love the world, the love of the Father is not in him.

1 Corinthians 7:32-33
But I would have you without carefulness. He that is unmarried careth for the things that belong to the Lord, how he may please the Lord:
But he that is married careth for the things that are of the world, how he may please his wife.

I think this really demonstrates the Love for Christ being the primary focus of ones love, that through him, we might glorify him by loving others.

Joh_15:13 Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends.

What exactly are you saying, that it's wrong to love your wife?

Nick bobby spoke about varying degrees of love. He/she didn't advocate loving your wife more than God.

I'm sorry if it is offensive, but it is honest. The married one cares for the world.

Love is sacrifice, the opposite of "self".

Christ is the greatest sacrifice, the greatest Love.

He was sinless, blameless, and bore our sin that through him we might have life.

Only by loving God fully are we capable of loving fully. Love for all.

This is true to an extent.

For example, I am married, and as a result, my life is not as devoted to Christ as say someone who wasn't married. I am required to also love my wife, and with that comes attention to her needs.

But this doesn't mean I forgo Christ for my wife, in fact, I brought my wife to Chirst, and together we are one in Christ.

I posted scripture. Please don't hate me. You are blessed with a wife, Christ wasn't.

I agree, if our cup is full, where is the room for God?

But while I do love my wife very much, I love Christ more.

And through him, we both can live for ever, its not about what we want in each other, its about what we can do to glorify Christ.
