Has anyone updated to 8.1 yet?
I did and have been having to continually tweak my system ever since.
To me, it just isn't worth the time.
All of your files come with you, but the desktop gets screwed.
My internet settings had to be completely reset because of "connectivity"problems..I'm connected, but at times the navigation shows that I'm not.
If you have classic shell, don't expect it to work for a while
Once again,it just isn't worth the hassle.

Installing 8.0 should have been enough to put you off!

Well get use to it once a year and losing $$$ from your wallet because that's the way it's heading.

You could use Linux and put the hassle behind you, your choice...

8.0 came preinstalled on my machine..

8.1 is free for those already running 8.0
Until I get the machine paid off or get another one,I'll stick with Windows, although,I wish I could revert back to XP..THAT was an OP I really liked!

Yes it's free but I was referring to the future incarnation of Windows, Windows Blue (Screen) which seems it will be updated once a year probably at a cost - welcome to spending more money :)

Microsoft are moving to a subscription based model, Windows Blue will slot in quite nicely with that mandate. XP users with a usable machine seem to be adopting Linux rather than upgrade to 8 - that is those users that know about Linux and what its capable of.

I have yet to upgrade to 8 at home and we have not at work, but I know several people who really like Windows 8. I have only barely used it for myself though

You're not missing anything but headaches.

I'm happy with Windows 7, thank you very much. :)

Tell ya the truth, when I get another machine,I just may revert back to either 2000 pro or XP.(I want three machines..two open source and one Windows).

I've got 8 on my Laptop and other than the User Interface & learning about the changes to that, I haven't had any issues. The Development (Flash, .NET, Java, SQL) Software I need have all been working without issues. The Games I like also have been playing (Civ V, Orcs Must Die) work fine.

8 is okay, yet I still am not totally happy with it,it's the update to 8.1 that is screwy.

I've been using Windows 7 64 bit ever since it came out and I've been quite happy with it. I stayed away from the disaster that 8 and 8.1 are and if the future is heading to a subscription model I think I might just dual boot with Linux Mint Debian Edition. Not only is it free, its stable! Keep Windows for gaming.

Good choice, goodness of Mint with Debian stability. Hopefully gaming will move towards Linux more in the next few years with Steams input.

Running 8.1 here. Installed it on 2 machines so far (just waiting on the new drivers for my audio interface before I update the studio) with no problems at all. Not sure why it messed up your desktop.

I really like the changes made. Modern looks great and I love that I can organize better. There is a start button now but I don't use it. Still prefer to use Modern UI because of it's much more economical IMO. Win+X update was also a big plus since they added shut down and a few other options to it. Also like the better skydrive integration. It's been very useful when transferring files between this computer and my recording studio.

Really liking the direction MS is going lately. Maybe once Ballmer is out we'll see even more progress.

I had hoped to give OpenBSD a try but I run a Nvidia 680 GTX 4GB in my system and the lack of a driver is a issue. I'm aware the creators of OpenBSD don't like closed drivers either. As far as ATI cards go, I gave up on them a few years ago after I bought a very nice card and every driver for it and update for it just crashed and crashed, instability has always been an issue for me with them. Oh well.

Yes, Theo is very much against closed source drivers hence no Nvidia for OpenBSD. I'm running an OpenBSD desktop currently on an ASUS mini-itx board which has an onboard ATI radeon chipset and it works great!

Agreed, ATI was dreadful a while back for driver support, that is drivers that didn't crash constantly but it's a lot better these days although not as good as Nvidia which is normally my default choice for Linux.

From a cursory Google search, it does look like nouveau is available on OpenBSD. On Linux, I finally got fed up with the issues that plagued the official Nvidia drivers and just went with the default nouveau driver. Works fine, although a major part of that could be that my graphics card is old (GeForce 6200 PCI).

The actual word as quoted at this page

X Window System support is available for most graphics cards, using the X.Org server. As with other free operating systems it is highly recommended that Nvidia cards are avoided since this vendor continues to show tremendous resistance towards releasing information that would allow X.Org to support their hardware properly.
Hopefully Nvidia may get their act together soon but, lets not hold our breaths...

Had a laptop with that graphics chip and it went west about 18 months ago with the official Nvidia driver under Linux and nouveau was not much better than the vesa driver - at least the vesa driver was stable!

With OpenBSD, ATI and Intel fine. As the mantra goes, Nvidia, you're on your own...
