2 king 19:35 - And that night the angel of the LORD went out and struck down 185,000 in the camp of the Assyrians. And when people arose early in the morning, behold, these were all dead bodies.
So we can see that the angels are extremely powerful and that another purpose they serve is to execute God’s judgement upon the creation.
And lastly
Psalms 103:20 - Praise the LORD, you his angels, you mighty ones who do his bidding, who obey his word.
So again we see here the reference to the power these being possess.
Another example of angels passing God’s justice is Acts 12:21-23
On the appointed day Herod, wearing his royal robes, sat on his throne and delivered a public address to the people. 22 They shouted, “This is the voice of a god, not of a man.”23 Immediately, because Herod did not give praise to God, an angel of the Lord struck him down, and he was eaten by worms and died.
Or the seven angels of revelation pouring out the wrath of God upon the world.
Ok next angels in their normal form are invisible to the eyes. As spirits they cannot been seen unless they ordered to do so by God
We know from passages like Galatians 3:19
For our wrestling is not against flesh and blood, but against the principalities, against the powers, against the world-rulers of this darkness, against the spiritual hosts of wickedness in the heavenly places.
So are fight then is against this spiritual unseen realm, but let’s try to gain some comfort and take a look at.
2 kings 6:8-17
And let’s all have a look at this passage.
Now the king of Aram was warring against Israel; and he counseled with his servants saying, "In such and such a place shall be my camp." 9The man of God sent [word] to the king of Israel saying, "Beware that you do not pass this place, for the Arameans are coming down there." 10The king of Israel sent to the place about which the man of God had told him; thus he warned him, so that he guarded himself there, more than once or twice.
11Now the heart of the king of Aram was enraged over this thing; and he called his servants and said to them, "Will you tell me which of us is for the king of Israel?" 12One of his servants said, "No, my lord, O king; but Elisha, the prophet who is in Israel, tells the king of Israel the words that you speak in your bedroom." 13So he said, "Go and see where he is, that I may send and take him." And it was told him, saying, "Behold, he is in Dothan." 14He sent horses and chariots and a great army there, and they came by night and surrounded the city.
15Now when the attendant of the man of God had risen early and gone out, behold, an army with horses and chariots was circling the city. And his servant said to him, "Alas, my master! What shall we do?" 16So he answered, "Do not fear, for those who are with us are more than those who are with them." 17Then Elisha prayed and said, "O LORD, I pray, open his eyes that he may see." And the LORD opened the servant's eyes and he saw; and behold, the mountain was full of horses and chariots of fire all around Elisha. 18When they came down to him, Elisha prayed to the LORD and said, "Strike this people with blindness, I pray." So He struck them with blindness according to the word of Elisha.
So we see here both to the young man in the story and to the assiyrians the army that stood with Alisha could not been seen. The angels at least in their proper form are spiritual being which cannot be seen with the naked eye.
God had to grant the young man a spiritual vision, so that he could even see these creatures.
In their proper form they don’t have bodies and they are invisible to people. Which makes you think that our little church here may not be as empty as we might have thought.
Also these angels are not bound by physical space.
Acts 12:5-10
While Peter was kept in prison, the church prayed fervently to God for him.
6 The very night before Herod was going to bring him out, Peter, bound with two chains, was sleeping between two soldiers, while guards in front of the door were keeping watch over the prison. 7 Suddenly an angel of the Lord appeared and a light shone in the cell. He tapped Peter on the side and woke him, saying, ‘Get up quickly.’ And the chains fell off his wrists. 8 The angel said to him, ‘Fasten your belt and put on your sandals.’ He did so. Then he said to him, ‘Wrap your cloak around you and follow me.’ 9 Peter went out and followed him; he did not realize that what was happening with the angel’s help was real; he thought he was seeing a vision. 10 After they had passed the first and the second guard, they came before the iron gate leading into the city. It opened for them of its own accord, and they went outside and walked along a lane, when suddenly the angel left him.
So we see here that these angels seem to have the ability to just appear at a point in space. Then simply disappear. Very much like the resurrection body Christ had when he appeared to the apostles. They are not bound by any physical objects but seem to be able to just appear at any point in the creation.
A handy trick if you’re ever locked out of the house.
I’ve been told that in Jewish tradition people told the difference between an angelic vision and an angelic appearance. And we see in the passage that even Peter himself was unsure. The test the Jews would use is to see if the food at their table had really been eaten after the angel had left.
Not only are these angels very powerful and able to move freely through creation but they are extremely wise.
2 samuel 14:20
in order to change the appearance of things your servant Joab has done this thing. But my lord is wise, like the wisdom of the angel of God, to know all that is in the earth.”
So we see the woman in the scripture here telling us that that these angels of God are extremely wise.
The next thing we learn about the angels from scripture is that they can take human form. Although their natural state is spiritual, a mind without a body. They can actually take the form of a human being.
This is the story of Samson’s mother just before his birth.
Judges 13:8-20
8 Then Manoah entreated the LORD and said, “O Lord, please let the man of God whom You have sent come to us again that he may teach us what to do for the boy who is to be born.”9 God listened to the voice of Manoah; and the angel of God came again to the woman as she was sitting in the field, but Manoah her husband was not with her. 10 So the woman ran quickly and told her husband, “Behold, the man who came the other day has appeared to me.” 11 Then Manoah arose and followed his wife, and when he came to the man he said to him, “Are you the man who spoke to the woman?” And he said, “I am.” 12 Manoah said, “Now when your words come to pass, what shall be the boy’s mode of life and his vocation?”13 So the angel of the LORD said to Manoah, “Let the woman pay attention to all that I said.14 She should not eat anything that comes from the vine nor drink wine or strong drink, nor eat any unclean thing; let her observe all that I commanded.”
15 Then Manoah said to the angel of the LORD, “Please let us detain you so that we may prepare a young goat for you.” 16 The angel of the LORD said to Manoah, “Though you detain me, I will not eat your food, but if you prepare a burnt offering, then offer it to the LORD.” For Manoah did not know that he was the angel of the LORD. 17 Manoah said to the angel of the LORD, “What is your name, so that when your words come to pass, we may honor you?”18 But the angel of the LORD said to him, “Why do you ask my name, seeing it is wonderful?”19 So Manoah took the young goat with the grain offering and offered it on the rock to theLORD, and He performed wonders while Manoah and his wife looked on. 20 For it came about when the flame went up from the altar toward heaven, that the angel of the LORD ascended in the flame of the altar. When Manoah and his wife saw this, they fell on their faces to the ground.
What we can learn from this passage is that Monoah had no idea who he was talking to. The Angel must have appeared to Monoah just like an ordinary human being.
Hebrews 13:1-2
Let love of the brethren continue. 2 Do not neglect to show hospitality to strangers, for by this some have entertained angels without unawares.
And again here we see that the people have no way of knowing who the angels are and therefore must appear as ordinary human beings.
The book of revelation gives us some good examples of angels with wings and other features. However this could merely be symbolic. The angels wings or eyes, could be a reference for something else. For example the spirit with seven eyes in revelation. The Jewish number for completeness was seven.
So seven eyes could be to say complete sight. Or could see everything.
So maybe they have wings, but possibly not.
We know from our studies of revelation that these angels are not to be worshiped and I see so evidence from scripture that we should attempt to contact them. They are a separate type of creation different from human beings. You will not ever become an angel.
Psalms 8:4,5
You have made him (man) a little less than the angels..." ()
Angels seem to be connected to certain countries and linked to the destiny of these nations.
Daniel 10:13-20
But the prince of the kingdom of Persia withstood me twenty-one days; and behold, Michael, one of the chief princes, came to help me, for I had been left alone there with the kings of Persia. 14 Now I have come to make you understand what will happen to your people in the latter days, for the vision refers to many days yet to come.”
15 When he had spoken such words to me, I turned my face toward the ground and became speechless. 16 And suddenly, one having the likeness of the sons of men touched my lips; then I opened my mouth and spoke, saying to him who stood before me, “My lord, because of the vision my sorrows have overwhelmed me, and I have retained no strength. 17 For how can this servant of my lord talk with you, my lord? As for me, no strength remains in me now, nor is any breath left in me.”
18 Then again, the one having the likeness of a man touched me and strengthened me.19 And he said, “O man greatly beloved, fear not! Peace be to you; be strong, yes, be strong!”
So when he spoke to me I was strengthened, and said, “Let my lord speak, for you have strengthened me.”
20 Then he said, “Do you know why I have come to you? And now I must return to fight with the prince of Persia; and when I have gone forth, indeed the prince of Greece will come.
In these passages it seems as if there are angels connected to at least 3 nations. The demonic angel connected with Persia and with Greece and also the angel connected to Daniel and Israel.
Luke chapter 22:41 – This is the story Jesus in the garden at Gethsemane. And
And He was withdrawn from them about a stone’s throw, and He knelt down and prayed,42 saying, “Father, if it is Your will, take this cup away from Me; nevertheless not My will, but Yours, be done.” 43 Then an angel appeared to Him from heaven, strengthening Him.44 And being in agony, He prayed more earnestly. Then His sweat became like great drops of blood falling down to the ground.
Now if you have one of the modern versions of the bible this passage may not appear in your translation. Or maybe on the footnotes. If your using a King James or something similar, the passage of course will be where it should be.
And I think this is a nice note to finish off on. I’d have loved to have done more. But I had to prepare quickly for this. It’s a fascinating topic of study I’d definitely recommend it as I found it very interesting.
Hopefully it gives us hope over the coming weeks to know that even though at times we may feel defeated by the world God sends these angels to us to strengthen us and fend off spiritual attacks against us.
Hopefully it makes us all think of the unseen spiritual realm all around us gives us to comfort to know that at our times of need God will send his angels to minister to us.
It’s a comfort to know they are there in some way serving our spiritual needs.
So I’ll finish with this
Psalms 91:10-11
No evil shall befall you,
Nor shall any plague come near your dwelling;
11 For He shall give His angels charge over you,
To keep you in all your ways.
