well a lot of Protestant Churches have the Christian flag that I posted a pic of and an American flag up by the pulpit
here is a picture of a random Methodist church
see the flags in both corners of the room?
this set up is very common

That looks Baptist except note the lack of a Baptismal Pool.... every Baptist church I've been in (the one American(Ex-Northern), Independent, Independent Missionary, Southern,) has had the two flags near the Pulpit area.

Also most other churches I've been in, I've seen the flags up front as well.

I think if you want to display them in church, unless it's a special season for the flags, they ought to be in the fellowship hall, northex or another area that's not where we are worshiping God.... but I also think most distractions ought to be removed and some of those would upset other posters....

I didn't even know it existed until I was went to the Christian high school. There was even a pledge of allegiance to it, (and to the Bible).

The only time I ever saw a flag in my church growing up was during the 4th of July celebration they always had.

Here is the Pledge to the Christian Flag

I pledge allegiance to the Christian Flag and to the Savior for whose Kingdom it stands. One Savior, crucified, risen, and coming again with life and liberty to all who believe.

and the pledge to the bible

I pledge allegiance to the Bible, God's Holy Word, I will make it a lamp unto my feet and a light unto my path and will hide its words in my heart that I might not sin against God.

Both taken from Christian Pledges - Pledge to the Christian Flag, Pledge to the Bible, Pledge to the American Flag, The American's Creed - ChristianHomeschoolers.com

And I did hear these growing up Baptist in VBS frequently, only once did I hear them outside that....

I don't like flags in the sanctuary, and I really don't like the "Christian" flag.

For one, I think it looks suspiciously like this...

I can kinda see the point of a "Christian" flag as decoration in the more iconoclastic, bare bones sort of churches, the ones that look like a theater or warehouse more than a church, but the churches I go to usually already have a lot of Christian imagery, crosses and crucifixes and other decorations, and in the liturgical colors. There that flag just looks out of place besides being tacky.

But I have a real problem with swearing allegiance to it.

. The appropriate use of them in the sanctuary would be in conjunction with things like Memorial Day, or services that coincide with Veterans Day or Independence Day,

Even then I don't like it. I don't think it's appropriate for a Church to celebrate secular State holidays in the Divine Service, like what I saw at the church I was at this Memorial Day, where the sermon was all about America and the military, with a bit about how Jesus died for you, like the soldiers, tacked on the end. It was even worse since that was (supposed to be) Trinity Sunday.

I see nothing wrong with the flag your picture shows, but I do agree a Divine Service ought to feature on the Divine, if needed or desired a second Service of the day could be set aside for this purpose.

Americans and their obsession with flags...

You are an American, just because you are living abroad doesn't mean you aren't still one of us...

It isn't about the flags, it's about the ideas those flags stand for.

And other countries have had flags before us, and I'm sure this conversation would have happened back in the days when England had much of the world under colonial rule, and there flag was everywhere in every land.

That being said, I have seen people from multiple different countries showing confusion about the fact that people display little US flags in their gardens and such when it isn't a patriotic holiday.

I'm more mixed in feeling on it at that point, probably because my memories of services like that seemed to be the opposite of what you described - the sermon was as usual, the only thing that was actually different was that there was a small in memoriam presentation that kept itself isolated to those who are actually related to members of the congregation. I can definitely imagine it getting out of hand, though.

My church usually just mentioned it. The 4th of July thing is really just "everyone come eat, hangout, and watch some fireworks." We also have bouncy things for kids, eating contests, it's really fun.

I equate it with the American flag. Some people have a hang up for a piece of cloth and like to show it respect and honor it with a weird cultish chant.

I have no interest in any flag. I wouldn't hesitate to use the Christian or USA flag as a picnic blanket.

My church still uses one during our Awana ceremony stuff. Mainly for traditions sake.

We have one. Every Lutheran church I've been in has one... My grandparents are Catholic, I can't remember if theirs has it or not...?

I don't think it's ever really been mentioned at all during a service, except maybe the first day we had it. I think it's just a reminder that we are all united in the Church.

Neat bump! I've never seen this thread. Lol, I haven't seen that flag either!

That seems to be a Protestant flag. I notice the picture of the churches that have it above are more protestant churches.

I wouldn't mind the idea of a "Christian flag." I think I would want it designed differently, though. Not fond of the one in the picture.

I live in Columbus Ohio and one of my friends who knows a lot about history and religion and stuff like that pointed out that Columbus is mostly Wesleyan in culture, with lots of Methodist, Nazarene and Free Will Baptist Churches (he said that Free Will Baptist has a lot of Wesleyan influence in it, that was not something I had heard before)
the history of the Christian Flag is that it was started in a Methodist youth ministry back in 1897
so it makes sense that the Methodist use it more, but I have seen it in other denominations

and yeah, it is mostly a Protestant thing, never seen it in a Catholic Church
