And what about Muslims in general, how do they feel about this? I'm asking because I respect your religion and I would hope that Muslims too see us as "people of faith" and that that is better than having no faith in God at all.

Why is that better?

This is a tricky question. While Muslims will emphasize Quran has distinguished the people of the book from other people and that in honours them more then other people, allowing Muslims to ear their food and marry their women....

These verses essentially lumps those who disbelieve from the people of the book along side polytheists as the worse of humanity:

إِنَّ الَّذِينَ كَفَرُوا مِنْ أَهْلِ الْكِتَابِ وَالْمُشْرِكِينَ فِي نَارِ جَهَنَّمَ خَالِدِينَ فِيهَا ۚ أُولَٰئِكَ هُمْ شَرُّ الْبَرِيَّةِ {6}
[Shakir 98:6] Surely those who disbelieve from among the followers of the Book and the polytheists shall be in the fire of hell, abiding therein; they are the worst of men.

Technically it's better to be an Atheist or a Deist, then the worst of humanity :p

What do you think of Pagans? We are generally theists, though some aren't.

Also, you made an opinion on a public thread on an internet discussion forum. Expect people to disagree with you.

Hello Cath. .

The Holy Quran, Chapter 60, Verse 8

“Allah does not forbid you to be just and righteous towards those who did not go into battle against you (over matters of faith), and did not expel you from your homes. Deal with them justly. Allah loves those who are just.”

We respect everyone despite what faith s/he holds. Although we have deep conflicts in the matter of faith but we still act in respect.

Hello. Pardon me for butting in because not being muslim I know I am not the person you were asking.

Nevertheless, I tend to look at how the worlds muslims are treating and have treated christians as a measure of their belief system (and their morals), regardless of how a moderate muslim might interpret their book giving us a non-realistic view.

The qur'an does lump pagans with christians, since christians are also non-believers according to islam. A non-believer is simply someone not muslim.

As for that look at real life, a once proud christian population founded by none other than Paul himself, once resided in Syria. It boasts some of the most beautiful ancient christian church buildings in the world. Now, muslim syrians are using the civil war as an excuse to rampage these christian neighborhoods leaving nothing worth salvaging. Christians are being executed and thousands have fled to Lebanon, something that Im sure has Paul begging to God for mercy, and God is building His anger for the day of wrath on His enemies.

In general, muslims respect all faith and religion (including if you believe that there is no God). Quran states :

In the name of God, the Gracious, the Merciful.

1. Say, “O disbelievers.
2. I do not worship what you worship.
3. Nor do you worship what I worship.
4. Nor do I serve what you serve.
5. Nor do you serve what I serve.
6. You have your religion and I have my religion.

Interesting question....

From what I understand, having no belief in a deity at all is worse than associating partners with God in the sight of our Lord. But if they die without repenting from either of them (and the message of the Oneness of God has reached them), then they both go to Hell for eternity.

As for personal feelings, then I would rather have a decent non-Muslim as a neighbor than a very sinful and immoral Muslim. So it depends on a person's behavior.

Your understanding may be correct but Muhammad's quran devotes lot of verses condemning christians for shirk(Associating partners with Allah).

It's not the Prophet's Muhammad's Qur'aan. It's the Book of God.....and it contains purely His Words.

Anyways, yes, the shirk of Christians is strongly condemned. But that doesn't mean that they're the worst of those who commit shirk in the eyes of God.

Nevertheless, the atheist who denies the existence of Allah and rejects His Messengers and disbelieves in the Last Day, is in a greater state of kufr and his beliefs are more reprehensible than the one who believes in Allah and the Hereafter, but he associates something of His creation with Him.

Islam Question and Answer - Atheism is a greater sin than shirk

So there appears to be a difference. In the end, however, it all amounts to some sort of disbelief. Both are committing the only unforgivable sin (if they die without repenting). Allaah can forgive any other sin that a person didn't repent from before dying except this.

Religious Believers Don’t Trust Atheists, Says New Study - ABC News

This study just points out what is already obvious. Theists don't trust Atheists, humanists etc. and this is well reflected especially in the politics of the US, at least.

I'd say the same is true for Islam, you'll probably like Christians more because at least they believe in a God...they are slightly less evil than dem der Atheists.

I am marrying a muslim and will tell you the truth as I see it. Muslims will love you dearly but still not hold you in high esteem spiritually. There is a misconception in the Arab world that westerners (including Christians) are on the whole wicked and immoral people. So they can love you and be good friends but when it comes to splitting hairs they take a holier than thou approach to Christians and have a pretty low opinion of Christian women.

This attitude is no different than the one held by every other Christian denomination and sect in the U.S. It's human nature to think that our own particular brand of religion is better than the next guys.

As for Muslim men not holding Christian women in high regard, that's the attitude I would expect from a religion that looks upon women as property to begin with.

It is unfortunate that belief causes people to look at others as less then them. I have been there when I was a Calvinist, and I looked at anyone who didn't share my beliefs as 'them'. It wasn't even a conscious thought really, it just was. I think it comes from people who worship the end of a finger, instead of the moon the finger is pointing at.

“Be certain that in the religion of Love there are no believers and unbelievers. LOVE embraces all.” Rumi
