I always get these attacks of guilt and despair as the thought often pops up into my brain, "You are not doing enough for God, just look at all the sin that is still in you, God can't accept you, his patience will run out, etc."

I heard that many people struggle with this, but I also have OCD which makes this far worse. Religious obsessions are just the tip of the iceberg for me though, as my OCD is severely debilitating.

I remember Paul Washer saying that we can't do anything to make God love us less, and we can't do anything to make God love us more.

And this other pastor I follow on Twitter said this: "Don't try, for several reasons, but it would be impossible for you to out-sin God's grace-provision for you in Jesus."

Tullian Tchividjian also said: "The law of God demands perfection; the gospel of God declares perfect all who trust in Jesus."

As long as I think that there is something I gotta do to be or keep myself saved, I fall into despair and just sin more rather than less. But when I think that there is nothing I can do to lose my salvation, and feel totally secure that God loves and accepts me, then I actually feel joy and peace and sin less and have desire to do good works out of gratitude to God.

I still keep falling into despair cause something always reminds me that there is still something I gotta do... there is a part of me that just can't believe that the Gospel is really that good and I still gotta contribute something to it.

Can someone clarify the Gospel for me? Is there something I still gotta do to be loved and accepted by God? How secure are we if we trust Christ? Is there an amount that we can fail which will result in God canceling our salvation?

well, if there was anything you could do to save yourself and your soul, then there would be no point in Jesus dying. you could just save yourself.

so really, there isn't anything you can do to save yourself but have faith.

if one could lose their salvation by being bad, it implies that they maintain it by being 'good' or doing good things, which then further implies that salvation is somewhat based on good works and deeds which it is not, at all, but faith alone

I like paul washer too.....have you heard his sermon on examine yourself? prob my favourite one

the whole losing salvation thing is a touchy topic tho i think....coz ppl who may not truly be saved may think that they are and then believe that they can't lose their salvation (which they never had)

sorry to hear about the OCD as well.....i worry a ton too but im not sure if its OCD, but i can imagine how tough that would be

You are not the Author of creation. You are not the creator or finisher of yourself. None of this is yours. You are not yours. God will have His way with His creatures. God constantly gets everything He wants; the more important that is to you the better you will feel.
If you are not satisfied with the sin still in you, thank God for your dis-satisfaction, and trust Him to satisfy Himself.
You cannot sanctify your self any more than you can save your self.

What I don't read in the OP is any gratitude for the sin God has removed, hope for the sin to be removed or acknowledgment that God is doing it all anyway.

Be stiil, and know that He is God.

Our salvation in no way depends on our faithfulness but on God's faithfulness. He has declared unconditionally that all who trust Christ's accomplished finshed work alone are everlastingly saved. To question that is to call God a liar. It is to say to God I don't believe you will keep your word. It is to say that the accomplishments of Christ aren't really enough. The good news of the Gospel is that Christ has accomplished all that is required, and more, to save us. Rest in Him and peace will be yours.

I am convinced that the reason that God leaves us in this body of sin and death is to wean us from it. The more we rest in Christ and learn of His wondrous Person and work the more we see ourselves as wicked wretches in need of Him. Our sin drives us to Him. The more sin you see in yourself the more you see that if He hasn't done it all it is hopeless.
Don't let the guilt of sin drive you to fear. That is Satan's most subtle tool. Fear will drive you away from God not to Him. You will always flee that which you fear. See Christ bearing your guilt on that cruel tree and do not fear.

My brothers may elaborate.......... the gospel is God the Son, pinned upon a tree for my sin.
