Hello! I'm looking for a good bible for my kids (not a child's version), but one that will have plain english, so it is easy to read and comprehend. I was thinking of maybe a NRSV, but I haven't seen one myself and was wondering if anyone can give me some recommendations. I'm going to be doing a project with them called The Child Training Bible, not sure if anyone has heard of it, but it's going to be a resource for them and study guide for all of us as a family. We are super excited about it!

Thanks!! :)

Avoid the NRSV. If you feel that the ESV is a little over their heads, have a look at the HCSB.

I agree. The NRSV uses subtle things, such gender-inclusive language where a masculine word was used in the original language (for example, "brothers and sisters" when the original language says "brothers")

I like the ESV. I'm not sure why, but it's very easy for me to understand compared to the NRSV, RSV, NKJV, etc. It also doesn't have that inclusive-language problem.

NRSV is way too much for that age (likewise ESV or HCSB). If that's the theological direction you're thinking CEB would be much better.

GW (God’s Word) is much better than NLT. Check out Romans 3:22 in NLT(se) to see some of the problems.

And if you read carefully, you discover that ESV also “inclusive language,” but it does so inconsistently.

Simply reading the ESV's Preface will explain their take on "inclusive language." It's not so much inconsistency as it is their translation intentions.

Wow, I never thought of doing that! ;) :p

^_^

Just so you know I have read the preface (and believe it or not a little more). The translation is still inconsistent on this point.

I'm not a child, but for long-passage reading, I love the CEV (not the CEB, as I found out when I Googled it...). Perhaps it's the single-column format. When I'm focused on word study, or topical study, I stick with the ESV. But I do find the CEV very easy to read for longer passage readings.

You're correct that CEB and CEV are completely different translations.
