Hi Singermom, My son is in Sparks too. He loves it and he asks more questions about the bible since he's been going. He can't wait to go back in January.

They have a meeting tonight, then they're off 'til January. My younger daughter finished her book last week, and I told her that she could take a little break from memorizing verses if she wanted to. No, she wants to get right into the review. My older daughter is the most decorated Sparkie in this group's history. I love seeing them grow closer to God and having fun at the same time!

Thats wondeful. My son loves the memory verses too.

I recommend AWANA to home schoolers and public schoolers because they can easily get as much out of it as any bible curriculum.

Me, too; it's in a safe and fun atmosphere, they can make more friends, learn Bible verses and get closer to the Lord.

You know what i tell my kids when they ask to go to a christian school? which we cannot afford especially with 5, is that what i believe is God put you in this school for a reason, so find out why He did and use it.
It is not about you, it is about what you can do for Him, and ya know what? they are now starting up a Christian club in a public school....Amen and Glory toYou Lord for showing my children not to be afraid to stand up for YOU!!!!!! and they go to a very GOOD and successsful public school, 17 on the list in the country.....and they CAN start a Christian club...so LIKE i said God puts evefryone in places He wants them to be.:prayer:

Can I recommend a book to all parents - Gospel Powered Parenting by William P. Farley. It will revolutionise your parenting!

One of the points he makes is that he knows parents who homeschool, parents who send their children to Christian or private schools, and parents who send their children to public schools. All these families have children who are saved and children who have wandered from their parents' faith - basic point - it is by grace that anyone is saved, not where they are educated. If your primary concern is to see your child saved then it doesn't matter where you send them to school; what matters is that you pray and trust God's wisdom, love and grace.

And as someone who went to a private Christian school from age 5-16 I can advise parents to think very carefully about their choice. I feel that I struggle socially because of my education. I faced no opposition to my moral and spiritual beliefs until I was 16 and by then, I feel it was too late for me to learn - therefore I made some very fundamental mistakes that had effects on my life that continue until today. I had developed no resistance to temptation, and I was abominably proud.

In addition the school actually harmed many of the children that attended because its ethos was actually not Christian - just because a school has the label 'Christian' does not mean it practices or even teaches Jesus's love and grace.

In raising my two children I am praying that I will teach them to love God, and to be useful citizens in their own culture - this will necessitate experiencing that culture and learning how to deal with it in a Godly way. SHeilding your children from any worldly influence may actually hinder them from being able to engage with the world around them, and will have no effect at all on whether they are saved or not - that is entirely down to God's grace.

Isn't parenting hard! How much I rely upon God's promise in James, of giving wisdom to any who asks, and generously!!

Good question! surprisingly no one has given an answer of what God's word says, Proverbs 22:6 "Train up a child in the way he should go, And when he is old he will not depart from it"...... It would appear the burden of training falls directly on the parents, if you choose to have others train your child then don't ever complain whether they walked away from the faith, or they end up 43rd on the national average of intelligence,(your basic public school education) because you are completely at fault. I could never send my child to a place, to be instructed that he came from a monkey and where he's taught how to properly put a condom on a banana, where little girls are raped in the back of the bus, And Billy's taught that its ok that both his daddy's sleep togather........If you think God condones this kind of teaching you are sadly mistakin. Raise up your own kids, trust me they don't need to be socalized by the majority of students of today. And your children aren't supposed to be sent into the fray of spiritual battle, at such a young and impressionable age, just like its never wise to send a new convert into the ministry with no training. They're children, Its your job to protect their mind, from garbage being taught as truth today.

I was homeschooled and then attended public highschool. My kids are in public school and it was a very good choice.

My 2nd grader is reading at a 6th-7th grade level. He has the oportunity next year to enter a gifted program for additional educational enrichment.

My 11 year old has an autism spectrum disorder. His teacher has her Phd in child psychology. He has access to therapies and equipment every day that he would not get in a private setting. Some of this stuff is quite expensive and he has gone from sitting under his desk growling and biting people all day.... to recieving mostly Bs on his classwork.

Faculty have been very respectful of our Faith. The children have been allowed to miss school for religious holidays. Both children have turned in religious-themed assignments and recieved positive feedback from their teachers on those projects.

I can only imagine what your public school system must be like....Does bringing up mean no public school?
ours is amazing, my girls 5 btw 1 high honor roll, ap classes bacclarace (sp) program the others all high honor roll, except one honor roll. little one thoguh learning disabled, But be have been Blessed with a school district that can afford a multitude of survices for her.
see yes while i agree with you that it does all start at home we must teach them at HOME the way they should go, and right Prayfully they will not depart, but there is never that grauntee, i see many children, that have been shelthered either at home, in general, or private school, home school, and when they were old enough they rebeled... so i have found which i feel is the balance for our selves. since we cannot afford christian, i could not do homeschool, so public is the way to go for us, and they are STRONG in their Love for God and doing His will. So For now this is where HE wants them, not where they want to be really, they prefer a christian school, but we tell them always its not about you, remember its about HIM and what you can do for HIM.
He placed you here for a purpose, let HIM use you, and they doing just that...Amen and Glory to You oh Lord......Praise Be to the Most High. For allowing them to be strong enough to stand up against the ones that try to tear them down, but because of You they are STRONG!!!

Do you believe that parents who send their children to school are not doing this?

In my opinion some of this training involes life lessons. They need teaching, but they also need practical application of these principles. I don't think it's a good idea to leave this until they go to college or enter the work place because by this time they will be outside the scope of parental authority.
I agree with you here. If (and probably when) the school is about to teach such things I will not allow it to happen. In most public school districts parents still have a legal right to withdraw their children from these classes. Plus the option of homeschooling exists if I need it.
And your children aren't supposed to be sent into the fray of spiritual battle, at such a young and impressionable age, just like its never wise to send a new convert into the ministry with no training. They're children, Its your job to protect their mind, from garbage being taught as truth today.
Thankfully our elementary school is still teaching the 3 R's and we live in the bible belt. Most of the kids are sheltered from bad influences and young children still look to parents as their main influence in the eraly years. In the later years it is different, but we are not there yet.

I am considering withdrawing from the public school system after the elemenatry years. I support homeschooling and I would love to do it, but I'm against legalism. Many homeschooling advocates are promoting it as a legalistic rule. Most public schools are not so bad that ALL Christian families need to withdraw ASAP. That time might be coming soon, but it hasn't arrived yet.

Good Morning,

Can I ask what you base this Knowledge On? Is this just the PUBLIC school system, or private also(that is not Christian), and Christian alike? I know maybe children that go to Christian schools that would shock most NOn Christian families by thier behavior, so just because one goes to a Christian school does not mean it makes them a Christian, like me being in a garage make me a car!;)

Just because a child is homeschooled, does not mean he/she is sheltered or isolated. We are considering homeschooling our DD (11) due to a mediocre public school system, peer influences, academic gaps, etc. Homeschooled children can be very social and versed quite well in their society, it's simply a matter that the parents get to choose those influences, not the public school system.

Public schools can be bad for all children in this day and age. Sometimes I think it would be better if the public schools were eliminated. Let private schools lead the way. If parents cannot afford to send their children to the private schools then some of that money wasted on what they call a "public education" can be used to assist the poor families.

I fully agree with Singermom... it's up to the parents to be proper examples. I've talked to a lot of non-believers with Christian parents and they've all said they lost their faith because their questions were left unanswered as a child. We have to make sure we do our best to answer those important questions when they are curious ready to learn. Singermom - That's awesome your 7 year old is teaching her classmates... It's probably good she's in public school so she can share the word:)

I know public schools can be bad, but so far I have two in the public school system (one is in the 1st grade and the other in the 5th) and I have had no problems thus far. Yes, private schools can have their advantages, but I attended a private school from kindergarten through the 9th grade and I will be the first to tell you that all the kids and teachers there were not Christians by no means. By the time I was in the 8th grade, some of the kids in my class were drinking, cussing, and having sex. So, needless to say, private schools aren't perfect by any means. I had a biology teacher in the 9th grade that bragged about being an atheist. I can only pray that my children continue to have good years throughout their public school experience.

Which is a bad thing if your kid ever decides to go to college and needs to take a biology course (been there... done that... got the bad grade to prove it.)

I took and passed Bio I and II at Mississippi State with B's. yep, I had to swallow the evolution lie for a few tests, but for the most part evolution worldview is very small part of college Biology curriculum.
