This is a philosophical question, not a scientific one, and it's directed at those who think the scientific explanations of the origins of the universe, our solar system, life, and humanity run counter to religious ones.

If you were a God with the power to create the universe and everything in it, would you:

a) Create planets one at a time, then create individual life forms on one (or more) of those planets?

or

b) Create the universe in such a way that the things you wanted to exist would come about on their own, according to the natural laws you yourself devised?

To me, "b" sounds like a more mature view of the Creator. But I'd like to hear other people's thoughts.

Nathan, I appreciate the maturity of your view, but since I have managed to age 30 years without ever actually growing up (sorry Dave B!), my response will be somewhat more immature:

If I were deity, and there were no other deities around to make things interesting for me, and there were no universe or planets, or people already, I would likely not experiment with a material creation. If I were bored, I would either: "shorten" eternity to match it to my capacity for self-entertainment, or create other deities with whom I could truly commune as a peer.

Either way, I would wonder whether this Creator wants to communicate with me or not.  And if He does want to communicate with me, I would expect that communciation to be as coherent as possible.

So clue, if you think if God wanted to communitcate with humans He might want to let him know that He is their creator - and He might want to do it in a way that was understandable and made sense to even the most primitive and unscientific people?

Sure.  And I'm not assuming (like you are) that we are necessarily smarter than our ancestors.  We are more advanced, but that advancement was a progressive movement, not sporadic increases in brain power over a period of time.  In other words, our current achievements have been built on the intellect of ancient/past geniuses.

It could very well be that creation as we read about in Gen Ch 1 came about pretty much on it's own. That God predesigned it all and like a wind up toy just let it go. He spoke them into existance.

But in Gen ch 2 when Adam and Eve came along, we read how God formed them out of the clay of the earth, along with the Garden and all the domesticated animals. Adam and Eve were very special to God and their decendants still are. They are a work of His hands.

If modern man were just another animal, and somehow things went wrong, then God could have just destroyed them and started all over again. There would not be a need for redemption. But God loved Adam and Eve, they were very special to Him, because they were created in a more personal way.
