I am an avid photographer, though I never took classes or anything like that. I just love photography and have been told I am good at it. I have a Fujifilm 2800x Finepix but it's only 2.1MP with 6x optical zoom. It's an excellent camera for what it is, but hubby wants to get me something better. He likes Canon over Nikon, and I want the Canon Rebel XTi. However, several people have told me don't get the Canon, it's crap, get the Nikon D40/50/80. I like the fact that the Canon has 10.1MP and the Nikon only has 6 or something like that.

Opinions? Pictures? :)

LOL that's what I thought. I have seen photos from the XTi and I love them...

But then I wonder if I need a $1500 lens to get those great pictures...in that case I might as well buy a better camera. Catch my drift? lol

There are some good cheaper lenses out there but generally when it comes to lenses you get what you pay for. My main lens cost $350 which is a fairly cheap lens which I think takes decent photos for the price.

I love my XT. I personally think Canon is better than Nikon in general with most of their DSLRs. There's a reason Canon has a far larger portion of the market share than Nikon. In fact, I've heard that Canon's research budget is about the same amount as Nikon's entire operating budget.

The XT is super cheap now if you can find em new, and the XTi is really cheap too since the XSi is out now. The only real difference between the XT and XTi is 2 more megapixels and a larger screen. 2 megapixels isn't a big difference for me because I'm not making large prints, and the bigger screen isn't that big of a deal since I just look at the pictures on my computer afterwards for the most part.

Here are some of my pictures. I've had great results, whether it's with my $75 Canon 50mm f/1.8 lens or my $800 Sigma 70-200 f/2.8 lens.

Taken with the Sigma lens.

I still am using my Rebel XT, 160,000 shutter actuations later, and two years of absolute abuse and no signs of giving out on me yet. This last weekend I put on another 2,000 actuations in hot, , cold, windy, sandy, rainy, muggy, dry conditions in only 36 hours. I swear, this camera is bullet proof. In fact when I become an airshow pilot, I want my wings to say CANON on them. lol

actually, the Nikon has 10 mp if you get the d40x or the d80.

If you are sticking with Canon, I would pick up the Rebel XSi. It just came out last month and it has a lot of bells and whistles for an entry level SLR camera.

If you are on a tight budget, the Rebel XT would also be fine. The price has dropped on it so you can find a really good deal if you look.

Btw, do some research on lenses. You are going to want to pick a lens that goes well with what you shoot. If you shoot indoors or places with low light, you'll want either an f/2.8 or f/3.5 lens. The f/2.8 is best but they are pricey. If you shoot outdoors, you'll want a good zoom lens. 135mm is good but 200mm is a lot better.

Hope that helps a little :)

A prime 1.8 lens would be a good choice too. Canon's 50mm f/1.8 lens is incredible for its price of $80.

Anyone who says "Canon is crap" doesn't know much about cameras. Its used by many many professionals. I often shoot events where there are professional photographers present and they almost invariably use canon cameras. Also, my photography insturctor who has been a professional for more than 30 years uses canon and so does his boss (the head of the photography department at the college I attend).

I'm not saying Nikon is a bad choice because it isn't. I just want to point out how ridiculous it is for anyone to say that Canon is crap.

Anyone who says xxxx brand is crap as a blanket statement is simply showing their ignorance. The fact of the matter is that among major brands when comparing cameras of roughly equal price, you will have roughly equal overall quality both in terms of build quality of the camera and in terms of image quality. The differences really come down to personal preference and the fact that certain cameras may be slightly more or less suitable for certain types of shooting and shooting style.

In terms of MP, 6 is plenty for the vast majority of what the vast majority of hobbists shoot. 6 will, with appropriate Photoshop massaging, be plenty for prints up to 11x15 that would be pretty equal in quality to 35 mm film. I know that someone will say that there is nowhere near the same amount of information in a 6 MP digital capture as there is in a 35mm film capture and they would be correct, but in terms of what your eye actually sees in a print viewed from a typical distance, the results are very close.

It's my opinion the camera is only as good as the user and the knowledge of the functions and how they work together to capture light.

I have the XT and love it. It's perfect for my needs and since I've chosen to not upgrade I have more $$$ for lenses. I'd rather have a variety of glass than have an upgraded camera with limited glass options.

Here's a side by side comparison of the three Canon models:

Hoooraay for Cristianna

It doesn`t matter one bit if you have the most expensive equipment and yet have no idea how to use it properly. The best way to grow in photography is to take pictures, ask questions, take pictures, read books and you guessed it.....take pictures.

Anywho to the matter at hand, any of the camera`s from the major camera manufacturers will produce excellent pictures with someone behind who knows what they are doing. I would advise however going with either Nikon or Canon as they have a larger support system (lenses etc).
Both manufacture great cameras and preferences are only personal, there is very little between them these days, in fact if I am going to be honest I think Nikon have the edge with the D3 and D300 but thats by the by. Read a few reviews find out which ones are in the right budget for you, which have good reviews and go down to the shop and try them out....which feels better, and do`nt let the salesman talk you into buying the most expensive unless its what you feel best with.

Hope this helps.
