• The General Mental Health Forum is now a Read Only Forum. As we had two large areas making it difficult for many to find, we decided to combine the Mental Health & the Recovery sections of the forum into Mental Health & Recovery as a whole. Physical Health still remains as it's own area within the entire Recovery area.

If you are having struggles, need support in a particular area that you aren't finding a specific recovery area forum, you may find the General Struggles forum a great place to post. Any any that is related to emotions, self-esteem, insomnia, anger, relationship dynamics due to mental health and recovery and other issues that don't fit better in another forum would be examples of topics that might go there.

If you have spiritual issues related to a mental health and recovery issue, please use the Recovery Related Spiritual Advice forum. This forum is designed to be like Christian Advice, only for recovery type of issues. Recovery being like a family in many ways, allows us to support one another together. May you be blessed today and each day.

Is there a difference between Asperges Syndrome and High Functioning Autism. And if so, what is it?

I don't know for sure, but we have one to three Aspies*, an HFA son and an LFA daughter.

*I am the only confirmed Aspie, but my 16yo daughter and 7yo son show some signs. We tend to process language appropriately enough, but (speaking for myself) I have some face blindness, don't always correctly interpret emotions and tend to be very [read TOO] blunt.

My 20yo HFA son is verbal, but has great difficulty summing up what others tell him and cannot understand ideas like cause & effect. The second problem made him virtually impossible to discipline when he was growing up. If you stood him in a corner for doing something naughty, he would have no concept of being in the corner BECAUSE of something naughty, he would think we were just having him stand there just because we felt like it. It never dawned on him that if he stopped doing whatever it was, he would stop having the consequences. This has had the effect of making him unteachable and stunting his behavioral growth both at home and at school. He has a mental age of about 6-10yo.

My 13yo LFA daughter is nonverbal. She finally got potty-trained about two or three years ago, though she still needs a night-time diaper and would "go" on her floor if our toilet was occupied, because she doesn't know how to wait. For the second problem, her doctor ordered her a porta-potty.

Without language, our communications with her are very simple and rudimentary, so she doesn't always understand concepts like modesty. On the plus side, she IS showing signs of caring about not being seen naked. Her mental age has been determined to be under 24mos.

Did u know? Autism is a mysterious disorder which affects over 120,000 Australians

This is a pretty amazing fact and if u weigh up how many Auzzies there r in Australia against this fact uv got a whole lot of ppl, I wonder how many ppl there r in Australia who have AS ;)
