A Ten Dollar Tax on Cigars?

OK . . . Now I'm really mad.

The democrat controlled congress is seeking a ten dollar tax per cigar to pay for the rising cost of children's health care. Can you believe it? Ten dollars per cigar??? That's not per box, but per cigar . . .

Bush says he'll veto the tax increase if it ever gets to his desk--not because he favors cigar smoking, but because of other provisions in the bill which would expand federal health care.

While I am not thrilled with the democrats or the republicans these days, this is what democrats do--raise taxes. Enough already!

Can you just imagine the impact this would have on the Reformed tradition? We are already cranky enough as it is. What would we do after those long synod and classis meetings? This would set back friendships and fraternal relations for generations!

I'm with Dr. Riddlebarger. I only puff on a cigar maybe once a year, but when I do I enjoy them and the folks I'm with at the time.

These folks may tax candy bars, cookies, cakes and sodas next so they can get our weight problem under control. Maybe a "Bacon Tax" to fight heart disease, etc... The tax man has the power to destroy and it is good to keep him weak.

At present the politicians are putting on the pressure to put out of business lawful businesses they don't like. Does anyone think they won't progress to more draconian measures against churches and people if we don't speak up?

In Germany they came first for the Communists, and I didn't speak up, because I wasn't a Communist. They then came for the Jews, and I didn't speak up, because I wasn't a Jew. Then they came for the trade unionists, and I didn't speak up, because I wasn't a trade unionist. Then they came for the Catholics, and I didn't speak up, because I was a Protestant. Then they came for me, and by that time no one was left to speak out.

Rediculous, really! I can't stand cigs/cigars, but that doesn't mean I'm all for doing something like that!

I can't imagine it will actually go through though.

I'm sure that there are much better ways to help pay for children's health care. OH! I have an idea! How about we be more responsible with the money we DO have! Huh, what a concept.....

Sort of reminds me of how they managed to get the lottery approved---"It'll help pay for schools, and every school will have ALL the money it needs to help our kids learn better" BullS***!! (pardon my french!) [bless and do not curse][bless and do not curse][bless and do not curse][bless and do not curse]es me off just thinking about it....

In my state it is called THE EDUCATION LOTTERY. What a joke. They are on TV almost daily begging the tax payers to approve yet another bond for building new schools. I say use the EDUCATION LOTTERY. <sarcasm off>

What's next, my pipe tobacco? I rarely smoke cigars but do enjoy them when they are good and expensive and given to me by someone else. My pipe, though, is what my wife calls my pacifier. She thinks it keeps me quiet and out of her hair. ^_^

Not long ago PA approved casino gambling - slots - supposedly to lower property taxes as the money would go to the schools. What a joke :p A number of years ago Ohio did the same thing, and from what I hear that isn't working out very well.

I could mention other taxes in PA, gasoline for instance which are high, that are used for things other than for what they were collected.

The bottom line is politicians never saw a tax they didn't like, especially the Democrats, and we will see more of this picking of our pockets should the majority in the house and senate gain the presidency.

And yes, mlqurgw, your pipe tobacco is probably a good candidate for some added SIN tax also. :sorry:

Some guy named Lenin, right? Er...maybe Lennon? Probably a McCartney dude involved, too.

Was listening to some old Traffic today and looking at my Revolver CD thinking about playing it next. Now I think I will. Thanks, Cyg!

I'm not quite sure why Dr. Riddlebarger makes this a particularly Democratic thing. It seems to me that Republicans love spending and raising taxes as much as any Democrat. The Republican Congress (no, not that one) failed to stem the tide, but rather increased it, as have Republicans on the State level. Also, pretty much every Republican president since Herbert Hoover has presided over huge expansions of the size and power of government at the expense of taxpayers.

Well then, what is something you enjoy, so we can recommend an exorbitant tax upon that as well?

After all, we should bear one another's burdens, right?

I think both of these statements miss the point, that it's not a matter of something that you enjoy or don't. While celebrating such a punishment for cigar-smokers seems to me authoritarian, petty, and absurd, that's not the primary problem. The problem with this tax is that it's a flagrant abuse of power by the state. Furthermore, it's going to fund something that the federal government has no authority to do. And really, it's not the government's job to take care of us from cradle to grave.

just come over to the UK sometime , and listen to the stealth taxes here , you don't know what the tax man is till you have been here

That is what I have heard, especially the VAT which is extracted (stolen) every step of the way.

In relation to other countries, we in the U.S. don't have it all that bad. But our politicians are trying to get us caught up with everyone else. :D
