Song writing

You might try spending some time in prayer, Heartsncrosses, and ask the Lord to direct you in your songwriting. Ask Him if there is a particular message or scripture passage you should focus on. Perhaps this is a time that God wants to teach you a new skill or a new way of approaching songwriting. Submit your skills and talent to Him, and ask Him to guide you. God bless!

I have some free-flowing friends I get with every once and awhile. We just relax, laugh, and praise God. That really helps stir me up.

Also, remember, get creative in other aspects of your life. If you're not an artist, try painting what you see as you read through a scripture portion. Or whatever else might work for you. I thought I was strictly musical, but as I've moved into other areas, I've expanded. The music I've been given reflects that. It's a bit time-consuming sometimes, but the release that comes from it is awesome.

You could try writing poetry as well or singing a melody line with just vocals, no words, there is just no end to what you can do to open yourself up for creative release in the Lord. Prayer works to. Sometimes I sing my prayers and they become songs. I just sit at the piano and play whatever, and pray in song.

Hope this helps give you some ideas to work with...

Blessings. -PW

I think praying is the key. Some songs come from circumstances (like going through a trial). I haven't really written a worship song before, but I would just start worshiping, or reading the Bible. Those could be good sources of inspiration.

I know quite a few songwriters, new and accomplished and they all give me the same piece of information... write what you are experiencing, and write it honestly.

For example, one friend of mine was really having a hard time faithwise, and this is a pretty strong, solid christian I am talking about. He had just got to a point where everything seemed to standstill. Being a songwriter, he tried to put into words how he was feeling......he said to me that this was just to hard. So instead, he literally just told God exactly how he was feeling, and it was these very words that were spoken to God in desperation, that are now being used in his church on a regular basis as a worship time.

So, to stop my ramble, get to know where you are spiritually and try and express that.

Don't be afraid to use scriptures. You can lead the congregation to speak into the promises of God. Start with that, so you're not putting yourself on the line so personally (with all your friends saying "you wrote that?"). You can focus on the music end. Then as you get comfortable arranging the music with the words, more things will come to you.

Remember what your end purpose is. You want to lead the people in worship, and build their faith, encourage them. When you write, think of what the words will do for someone (in contrast to how genious and lovely they will perceive your words).

I am amazed at what Yolanda Adams does for the listener. She tells her stories, but the slant is on encouraging people. Or watch CeCe Winans sing... all her glory goes to God, but she is also gracious with her entire audience.

Remember that the congregation contains a mix of skilled musicians and people who want simple chords. Be creative, but don't write anything too musically difficult. I would love to have the notes or chords projected along with the lyrics, so we know what we're singing... not sure if others feel this way.
