I love EMG 81's! I have those in the bridge of both my Les Paul and my SG... sweet deal! Added a very professional quality to the sound!\

Lately I have also taken a liking to Gibson P-90s... they have a really hard, chuggy sound to them that's great for punk rock!

What kind of pickups do you like, being manufactuerer, and/or pickup model?

Guys,

I'm about to get some EMGs in either my Gibson Les Paul or my Hamer Flying V. My V has the least favorable pickups of the two. But If I put the EMGs in the Les Paul I can put the Les Paul pickups in the V and both would be better off. But the Les Paul sounds fine just as it is. What do you guys think?

If the LP sounds just fine, don't touch it. I haven't touched any of my Gibsons. You also have to find which EMG pups will give you close to what you want to hear. I have a Greco LP that I check pups with. I find the 81 & 85 are good pups for high output, with the 85 being stronger, but since I don't use a lot of volume, I actually prefer the tone of the 58. If you use alot of volume or loud OD, avoid the 58, since it gets a bit noisy. Still, I'd leave the LP alone.

Stratosaurus,

I'm not quite sure what I'm going to do yet. I play Blues and praise and worship so I don't need heavy volume. But still I kick it pretty decent on guitar solos so maybe an 81 and a 85 might work. I hear that they are very repeonsive to your playing attack so it shouldn't be a problem. The Les Paul could do with a bit more bass. I run both pickups full out all the time.

Barry,
If your using moderate volume & playing blues, you should check out the EMG-58. Most people prefer the 81/85 setup you're talking about or the 81/81 setup, but I found them to be a bit too harsh, if they're not push real hard. The '58 seem to have a smoother breakup & more 'body', which is probably just a better bass response at lower volume, but...this is just My personal preference. You might could check to see what others say & if the EMG site might have some info/help hints.
Still wouldn't touch the LP! :)

EMG dual sound pickups in My Paul and I'd like the Blues wound Frailins for the Strat Alnico "III"s in treble poles and "V"s in the bass pole positions. Sweet highs and crisp bass.
I'd like to try Fralin's threaded P-90 style Strat pickups. I love the sound of the old P-90 pickups for slide and blues style.
