Actually with new technology there is little if any "scraping" and legally speaking poo must be disposed of (into the toilet not the trash) even with disposable diapers. And it's about 2 extra loads of laundry a week.

I don't know ANYONE who dumps the poo into the toilet before throwing the disposable diaper away....that's a new one on me! lol

Yeah.... no disposing of poop for me with disposable diapers.... and the idea of having dirty diapers laying around my house long enough for a load is gross to me. :( I can take out the trash whenever I want. I hated those diaper pails.... Diaper Genies.... by the way, does anyone use them or hate them?

Hmmm so no one uses cloth diapers?

We do! I just wasn't sure if I should post because the thread was comparing and talking about disposable diapers. But, yes, we use cloth (actually flats :)) and also use wash cloths (the baby ones or one's I've made) as wipes. I love cloth and wouldn't even consider putting disposable back on my kiddos ... I know I used to hate the feel of paper and plastic when I needed it once a month (I use cloth now for me too).

Actually, if you read the diaper packages carefully enough, they all say that you need to dispose of human waste (poop) in the toilet before throwing them away. Think of all the human waste in our landfills right now ... all that bacteria making it's way through the layers into the soil ... running off during storms towards rivers, lakes, oceans ... eww! In terms of washing cloth, most people I know (IRL and also on the 'net) tend to wash every other day ... throw them in the wash, throw them in the dryer, and throw them in a laundry basket in the kid's room ... and no running out in the middle of the night. ;) And, believe it or not, the pail doesn't stink up the room (I keep ours in the bathroom) or the house ...

Yes but about washing my point being that she said it was only 2 loads a week.... if I do it every other day then it is 3/4 loads a week. And if its going to be 2 loads a week then they're going to be sitting around for 3-4 days a week.

I am okay with you using them, sounds like you're happy, but its definitely not for me! I also don't like the leaking principle and fastening. Oi. Happy diapering to you... ;)

I keep our diaper pail outside. I remember that it said on the diaper bag instructions, to scrape the poop out of the diaper and throw it into the toilet before disposing of the diaper. I wish I had started that habit when my kids were small. I still have one in diapers, but now I am too busy to do that extra work. My kids are 5, 3, and 18 months. Whew! Only 1 left to toilet train.

I have never heard that we are supposed to scrape poo out of disposable diapers. Perhaps I am not environmentally friendly, but when you think of all of the other things that are filling the landfills -- women's hygiene products, medical waste, etc. -- baby poo does not seem like the worst thing. I'm going to continue to bag it up and toss it.

I have attention deficit d/o, so I do not always get around to the laundry in a timely manner -- so the poo-poo diapers would probably become an environmental hazard in my own home. Again, I resort to the "gaggy poo" plea on this one.

ok so if you go with the idea that poo in a landfill is worse than poo in the toilet, just think about where all that poo in the toilet goes... not all of it is as sanitary as it may seem... there are way worse things for us to be contaminated by in any landfill as the other poster said. i just read my pack of parent's choice diapers and it says "please be considerate and sanitary and shake or rinse baby waste into the toilet"... yeah way sanitary. i dont get it...thats about as logical as a family restaurant not having a changing table in the bathroom b/c it isnt sanitary but then they dont have seat covers for the toilets...pfft.

I am intending to use my fuzzi bunz cloth dipes but they are STILL resisting water and I'm pretty sure they're going to leak when I do use them. Still using huggies that don't fit.

A couple thoughts:

Did you buy them new or used? If used, you may want to do a couple of washes with only hot water to make sure there is no detergent residue on them.

Also, fleece will appear to repell water when you dribble water on it. But, if you have something absorbant behind the fleece (cotton, hemp ...), the water will wick through the fleece and get absorbed underneath.

Have you tried them on your little one yet? What are you planning on stuffing them with? Personally, I would stuff one and put it on and see how they go ... most often once they are one, the fleece is pressed up against your child's skin, and there is something absorbant underneath, they will wick through just right and leave your little one feeling dry.

We've used Fuzzi Bunz off and on (still do with my older son at night), so if you have any questions, please ask. :)

White Clouds have changed so much since my son was a baby.....% years ago they were the best we found. Now with my daughter they are worthless. They don't fit right and they leak. When she sits, you can see how they open at the legs...which cause major poo and water leakage. We went to luvs, and we really like them. We did switch to Huggies when my daughter rashed out thinking it was the diapers. I just don't like them as much as luvs. Just my 2 cents.....

Who asked about the Diaper Genie/pails? (too lazy to go back & look! lol)

Anyways, we got a Genie for a baby shower gift for Andie & I think I used it maybe for a month....the refills were too expensive, it was a pain to change, etc etc. I ended up just putting them in a trash can in her room & emptying it each night when she went to bed. A couple times a week I'd wash it with hot water & bleach, I'd also Lysol the inside when I emptied it. Never had a problem with smells, PLUS it was MUCH cheaper!!

What kind of pail do you use? We ended up getting 2 large air tight pet food contianers. We couldn't find an air tight pail anywhere save for the expenseive and difficult genie and other super pails. I got all of my cloth diapers and wraps (prowraps) from showers. So for no money that we put in whatsoever (though I plan to buy a dozen or so All In Ones for baby sitters and such) we are set from the day he comes home (well after his meconium is gone) to the day he wears big boy pants! we just saved about $3000!

Grown up poo is already there and our water doesn't just filter back into our homes or into our rivers and lakes.

I would LOVE to have Fuzzi Bunz. We just couldn't afford them though. I'm jealous!

We actually started with a service when ds#2 was born ... used it for 2 months and then bought/washed our own. So, we have the pail they gave us ... basically like a trash can with a lid. It's not airtight but I haven't noticed any smell coming from it unless I leave the lid up. I have two washable liners that I rotate with the wash - just throw the liner in there too.

That is so awesome that you got your dipes and wrap from your shower!!! Did you do an on-line cloth registry? You must have some great cloth support. :)

Do you sew? If so, I can send you some info about making your own - for about $16, you can get a yard of PUL and a yard of micro and make 5-6 pockets! :)
