  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Futurist Only Apparent Contradiction between Matthew 24 and Luke 17

The Great Tribulation begins at the abomination of desolation. Jesus said this would be a terrible period of time, spanning multiple days (Matt. 24:22). This terminates when Jesus is revealed from heaven. (Matt. 24:29-31) However, a cross-reference to Luke 17 seems to indicate that the...

A Literal Interpretation of the 70 Weeks that Doesn't Force Anything

SUMMARY The 70 "weeks" refer to Sabbath-year cycles (7 years each). Daniel's prayer relates to the exile in Babylon, which is based on Israel's violations of the Sabbath year and their consequences as laid out in Leviticus 26. His plea for restoration aligns with the prophecy's promise of...

Bible conundrum: Cyrus's Decree and Daniel's 70 Weeks

Maybe you all can help me with a Bible conundrum. The 70 weeks prophecy in Daniel 9 kicks off with a "decree to restore and rebuild Jerusalem." Even if the math doesn't work out, how could this NOT be the Cyrus decree in 539 bc? Because Isaiah says: "It is I who says of Cyrus, ‘He is My...

Futurist Only Revelation 17: Antichrist Reigns Twice?

In this post, I will argue that the Antichrist actually has a first reign, leaves political office, only to return to reign again in a stronger fashion. While this may seem far-fetched, its not as weird as it sounds considering the views of some futurist writers. Other than the book of...

Prove me wrong: Every possible starting point to the 70 Weeks Prophecy faces insurmountable problems

I guess my biggest concern is that this decree doesn't relate to the building of the city. Now that I think of it, I suppose no decree explicitly mentions the initial authorization to rebuild the city, since the authorization to Nehemiah related to rebuilding the city after fairly recent damage...

Prove me wrong: Every possible starting point to the 70 Weeks Prophecy faces insurmountable problems

I heard it was somewhere between 6-4 BC. Is that the number you go with?

Prove me wrong: Every possible starting point to the 70 Weeks Prophecy faces insurmountable problems

Thanks for your reply. For the purposes of this thread, I'm committed to a Messianic interpretation of the 70 weeks. And from that standpoint, I don't see how Cyrus's decree can fit, since his decree + 483 years leads us to a time well before the time of Christ. Maybe you can help me unpack how...

Prove me wrong: Every possible starting point to the 70 Weeks Prophecy faces insurmountable problems

Thanks for your reply. I do agree hindsight is very helpful in this regard. But its not particularly useful from an apologetics standpoint. If I told someone about the four decrees and didn't tell them what year each of them was, I doubt they would correctly guess the start of the 70 weeks. I...

Prove me wrong: Every possible starting point to the 70 Weeks Prophecy faces insurmountable problems

Thanks for your reply. I have heard some different theories that the dates used by historians are actually incorrect, due to apparent difficulties with Ptolemy's Canon. For example, I heard it proposed in one journal article (by a Jehovah's Witness) that implied the 20th year of Artaxerxes is...

Prove me wrong: Every possible starting point to the 70 Weeks Prophecy faces insurmountable problems

Thanks for your reply. I can go either way on the Sabbatical cycles. The Jews interpreted the passage that way before Christ. And there are many allusions to Leviticus 25-26 in Daniel 9, which may support the idea that these are sabbatical cycles. However, it does bother me that this is a...

Prove me wrong: Every possible starting point to the 70 Weeks Prophecy faces insurmountable problems

Thanks for your reply. How do you figure? 538 B.C. + 483 years does not lead us to the Maccabean revolt. How do you interpret this passage? Thanks!

Prove me wrong: Every possible starting point to the 70 Weeks Prophecy faces insurmountable problems

Hello everyone, I have been researching the 70 weeks prophecy for eschatological and apologetics purposes. However, I find every possible starting point to be extremely unsatisfying. I used to take the "prophetic year" view, wherein each year is reckoned as 360 days each. But after abandoning...

Futurist Only The Gospel to Every People Group by 2031? (Matt. 24:14)

Hi d Taylor, hope you are doing well. Three questions: 1) Where does it say that the 144,000 are evangelists? 2) If the Great Commission is accomplished by angels, then why are there people from every tribe language and nation coming out of the Great Tribulation (Revelation 7), long before...

Futurist Only The Gospel to Every People Group by 2031? (Matt. 24:14)

Hi Sandman. Hope you are doing well. You got a Scripture citation for that claim?
