    Is THIS Orthodoxy?!

    Cold up there, then?

    Is THIS Orthodoxy?!

Yeah, dude, you've got me totally figured out. I'm a horrible bigot, who would like nothing more than to see all churches united under the ethnic banner of my choosing. :sigh: When you come down from that high peak, please let me know how the weather is up there.

    Orthodox wedding receptions

Yes. The money thing is really common, though we didn't have it, but I've seen it at (Baptist, Midwestern) cousin's weddings, for example.

    Is THIS Orthodoxy?!

I didn't say that, though. I give up trying to explain myself; you'll just have to believe that there's no bad intent in my generalization, and that's it.

    Is THIS Orthodoxy?!

Which part of it? The one where I suggested visiting a lot of churches, and that it was 'neat'? Or the part where I generalized broadly about churches based on my personal experience with them? There's nothing 'objectionable' in having an opinion based on experience, is there? Ugh, I am...

    Orthodox wedding receptions

I married a Russian woman at a Greek church-- we had Vodka and those Greek wedding cookie things. One thing her father did was offer us some bread, salt, and wine on the way into the reception; I see it listed as a polish tradition. So, In short, the answer to your question seems to be 'no'. :-)

    Is THIS Orthodoxy?!

I didn't. I said that in general they were more friendly to visitors, and that Russian churches tended to have more variance from parish to parish; it usually depends on who the majority of their congregation consists of. There's no endorsement on my part of one set of churches over the other...

    Your favorite hymn :)

Axion Estin-- it was chanted as my wife walked down the aisle at our wedding; and I can't hear it anymore without thinking about that day.

    Please help.... :-/

Avoid specific discussion of doctrine, and don't use phrases like 'fullness of the truth'-- you're setting yourself up for an argument. Instead, focus on what is leading you to Orthodoxy *personally*, not the differences between the churches.

    Please help.... :-/

To be honest, I wouldn't participate in such a discussion; it's not your job to defend Orthodoxy, nor should someone engaged in honest study of the faith be placed in such a position-- especially with a missionary who is attempting to make it his job to lead people away from the Church. If you...

    Is THIS Orthodoxy?!

Generally speaking, the Antiochians and Greeks seem more friendly towards visitors-- not that the Russians can't be, but it seems to vary more from parish to parish than the Antiochians and Greeks. While you're not in a good situation now, you'll be in an enviable situation in the near future...

    Orthodox Prayer Book

There's also: http://www.svspress.com/product_info.php?products_id=2666 "A Manual of Eastern Orthodox Prayers"; which contains morning and evening prayers. If you're visiting a church, and have a priest, he can work with you on a rule of prayer.

We are nearing the end of Lent, brothers and sisters.

Me too. My first Lent. I was just telling someone how I'll miss it the other day. She said "be quiet about it until you have had your first Pascha." :crossrc:

    New Icons

Your priest will bless them; generally, they just put them on the altar during liturgy, if memory serves.

    Working out during Lent...

I've been doing a lot of smoothies with soy protien powder in 'em for my protien needs-- Like Mary, I've lost a bunch o' weight and don't want to stop my routine (like prayer, if I don't do it regularly, exercise falls by the wayside, and I begin to resemble Jabba the Hutt). I don't know what...
