I'm just curious... For those of you who work out regularly, do you continue to do so during Lent? In what ways do you modify the fast so you can continue working out?

I'm trying to get back into running. I was running regularly in the fall, but fell out of the habit due to work and other factors in Jan/Feb. Since I'm trying to eat less during the fast, I'm wondering if running should take a back seat for the month of April.

Hi, Momz -

I'm certainly no expert on what we "should" do, but I'm continuing my work-outs as usual, and the only modification to the fast is that I have a breakfast bar in the mornings, just to get something in my stomach. And then a piece of fruit - usually a banana - around 4:00 in the afternoon if I'm going to my training session.

I've lost 117 lbs so far (since 9/03) and I'm not done yet, so I don't want to get out of the habit of daily workouts. :)

I've been doing a lot of smoothies with soy protien powder in 'em for my protien needs-- Like Mary, I've lost a bunch o' weight and don't want to stop my routine (like prayer, if I don't do it regularly, exercise falls by the wayside, and I begin to resemble Jabba the Hutt). I don't know what sort of routine you're in/on/contemplating, but there's nothing about the Lenten diet that should restrict you from exercise; remember, the "point" is not self denial, but self discipline, and I can't think of a better form of self discipline than good old fashioned regular exercise.

(I'm a bit of a born again workout fellow; losing the weight and starting to look like a man, not a potato will do that for you!)

Way to go, Toddbert! And I agree that this is good self-discipline. I think it has helped me in other areas.
