  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Couple Welcomes 17th Child, A Daughter

You could be right. I know that I don't recall seeing any posts declaring all large families to be horrible ideas, and I'm also pretty sure that there haven't been any posts attacking the concept of homeschooling. It's just that from the current set of responses, it would seem that most people...

Couple Welcomes 17th Child, A Daughter

What I am wondering is if there is any hard evidence to back up the idea that homeschooled children from large families are going to be inherently messed up. There have been quite a few posters who have stated something along those lines, but as of yet I have not seen any evidence produced to...

Couple Welcomes 17th Child, A Daughter

I find it interesting that everybody seems to assume its wrong to have seventeen kids when (probably) none of us have lived in seventeen kid families. Out of curiosity, would it be irresponsible to adopt seventeen kids?

Foster child to be taken away because couple refuse to teach him about homosexuality

As has been said several times on this thread, the government can legitimately require some kinds of instruction to be given to children that the government is paying for. I've chosen your post in particular here, Phred, because the phrase "fundie freaks" raises very interesting questions that...

    If morality is subjective...

The line that you (accurately) quoted about how "there is no particular reason for me to care what a subjectivist has to say bout morality" was not a statement of my views. I thought I was accurately summarizing (sp?) the posts of some of the subjectivists who have responded on this thread...

    If morality is subjective...

So far, we are in agreement... :) This is an idea that I have not tried to defend, largely due to the fact that it is indefensible. If I have given you the idea that I personally see no reason to listen to what a subjectivist has to say about morality, then I apologize. I tried to make it...

    If morality is subjective...

Isn't it ironic? We're both speaking English, and yet it seems almost as if we're speaking different languages... I'm going to try one more time. Whether subjectivism is the "right" or "wrong" way of looking at morality is completely beside the point. As has been stated on this thread...

    If morality is subjective...

Let me rephrase it again. If you freely acknowledge that your moral code is one that you came up with yourself, and that everybody else needs to make up their own moral code as well, then why the heck should I care what you have to say about morality? After all, it doesn't have any authority...

    If morality is subjective...

May I refer you to the tail end of an earlier post? True, there is little to no practical difference in terms of the debate, because, just as you say, people will have their own opinions as to what that objective moral code is. Your reasoning for why you would listen to me on the subject...

    If morality is subjective...

Pretty much. If you acknowledge that your moral code is simply your opinion on morality, then I have no reason to care what you have to say about morality...unless I think it is "right" to at least listen to what people have to say. It's true that people will disagree on what that...

So right and wrong are cultural phenomenon as much as anything else?

    If morality is subjective...

And if everybody lived in a society like that, would murder ever be wrong?

    If morality is subjective...

Sorry about the rather extended delay here, but I don't have as much time to spend online as I might like... Regardless, I enjoyed reading your replies, and I hope to be able to respond in kind. relaxeus, I would agree with you that laws are typically the result of having the majority of a...

    If morality is subjective...

I guess I'm mostly curious to see what I can dig up, so here goes. If morality is subjective, then why should anyone care about the moral code of a subjectivist? If all morality is subjective, then isn't that person's moral code restricted solely to that person? This is a question that only...
